Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: The colors! I love feeling like I am in the Mediterranean or in Mexico, and yet a warm, colorful space like this exists in Portland. And the smell. We have filled the courtyard with lilies and other lovely scented flowers.
Biggest Design Challenge With This Space: It is long and narrow and does not lend itself to traditional conversational groupings of furniture. So we chose to have a dining area at the end, a little sitting area for reading (the blue wicker settee), and a conversation grouping up close to the BBQ where we sit and chat while grilling dinner.
Tips for Creating a Great Small Outdoor Space: Since everything will be viewed at close range, details are important. You can insert small whimsical yard ornaments that might get lost in a larger setting. Also, decide who you are designing it for: your own pleasure or to make it comfortable for guests. Feel free to depart completely from your "indoor" decorating style.
Thanks, Shelley, and good luck!
