Name: Shelley and Reed, with children Beatrix and Callum
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Size: 1,600 square feet, including semi-finished basement
Years lived in: 7 years, owned
Inside Shelley and Reed's charming 1934 traditional is a delightful — and surprising — mix of bold colors, DIY wonders, and creative details. Creativity is encouraged in this Madison, Wisconsin home. Whether it's repurposing a dresser for dining room storage or filling the non-working fireplace with tissue-paper flames, neither product designer Shelley nor attorney Reed is afraid to look at a room and say, "What if?" Better yet — they ask, "Why not?"
The couple brings cheery personality and humor to every room, without sacrificing function or storage in the modestly sized space. While respecting the home's historic details, they have made each room feel modern and fresh. Graphic patterns mix with dramatic color choices. Clever craft projects have an artistic sophistication that makes them elegant rather than cutesy.
The best thing about visiting, say friends, is discovering what new projects have been completed since the last visit. Shelley's professional-level sewing skills and "never-say-can't" attitude let her fearlessly take on any upholstery and window-treatment project. On this day, she was contemplating whether she and Reed could construct their own chicken coop. We think they can--and that it will be the most charming chicken coop on the block.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: For decorating and for life: Dolce vita. To me, that means surrounding myself with objects of beauty and meaning (see kids' artwork, husband's bicycle) and people of joy and humor (see husband, children). If it makes us happy, it gets into my house.
Inspiration: FLOR catalog art direction. I love how they mix architectural and decorating styles to create really interesting and livable-looking spaces. I'm a big fan of white Scandinavian interiors, but I live with two kids, one dog, two cats, two lizards, fish and a husband. Resistance is futile.
Favorite Element: My mid-century dining table, scored via Craigslist: oval teak table with inlays, two leaves, tabletop pads, and six chairs for $225. $225! There should have been another zero behind that number. I am so thankful for insomnia and smart phones.
Biggest Challenge: Creating a space for everything, and keeping everything in that place. This comes easy to one obsessive-compulsive occupant and perplexing to everyone else who lives here. If I thought it would work, I'd put Julia-Child-style circles on my walls, floors, and cabinets to make sure things would be returned to the right spot.
What Friends Say: On the first visit, "Your house has so much character." On the third visit, "I can't wait to see what you've changed!"
Proudest DIY: Remodeling the kitchen and bath. We did the demo on both rooms, and re-did everything but the plumbing and cabinet installation. We discovered our tub had two exposed sides and that the previous owners had actually covered up about a foot of space beyond the foot of the tub. We tiled the whole wall around the tub and were able to hang full-size towel racks there. Conversely, my saddest DIY is the kitchen floor. The product scratches like crazy and the planks are shifty. Come back in six months: I'm gonna tear that sucker out, and start again. Have you seen that tile that looks like hardwood?
Biggest Indulgence: Power tools. We could have rented them, but Reed knows how much I like to make and remake stuff.
Best Advice: Give the ceilings three coats of paint before you move in. I wish I had heeded this advice.
Dream Sources: Paris Flea Market, plus three months vacation there to make sure I didn't miss anything

Ercol Bar Stool
Incredible home. If Anthropologie called, they would want their home back.
A true house tour and not a 'stuff' tour. THIS HOME IS SOOOO LOVELY! Love the roman shades, the colors and warmth of this home. Love the print in the bathroom.
Coveting the color, creativity, and artful *clutter* of this cozy cottage. High marks, too, for all the edifying notes accompanying the photos. And that chest of drawers in the dining room is so perfectly imperfect!
What a charming place. Thumbs up, guys.
the kitchen is adorable ! the black bedroom is elegant and the children's details are wonderful. Growing up in a home like this, where books and art are treasured and cared for makes a difference. Wish I could see a closeup of the kitchen window sill--
Oops, there IS a closeup. I'm still not sure what the cute animal things are though. ( I've discovered through AT that I love orange accents )
My favorite quote: "I'm gonna tear that sucker out, and start again."
I love every inch of this home. I always wanted a place like this but could never achieve that level of pure coziness so I adopted a more modern approach but in my heart of heats not too much beats coziness. It's so unpretentious. Pure joy!
I am deeply in love with the fox (I think it's a fox) pillow on the sofa. Where did you find that treasure?
very beautiful and cozy!
I LOVE the tissue-paper faux fire! I am so stealing that idea.
Thanks for making me drool all over my keyboard AT! Delightful through and through. I love all of those roman shades - I've made some too. A bit curious about the grey window treatment in the dining room - are those "mini" roman shades? A rolled shade? I'm a fan - just don't know how they work. Either way - A+ for window treatments :)
One of the most lived-in spaces Apartment Therapy has ever featured--and I mean that in a good way: This family fully inhabits their lovely house. They have a lot more stuff than I do, but I appreciate the way it all looks like it is put to good use. Love the era of the house and the details that come with it--looks like a cool space to grow up in.
LOVE this house. Reminds me so much of my mother's house. Hers is also cozy, and she has the most random stuff but somehow makes everything work together! Super, super cozy, both yours and my mother's. I'd love to have a similar home, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to make it look as good!
wow--by far my favorite house tour so far.
Love all the patterned window treatments!
It absolutely glows. It looks like it's designed for living, not for showing off.
I want to be your friend :) As a fellow Wisconsinite i appreciate this so much!! I love how lived in everything is...down to the pictures taped around the upper bunk bed. I just bought my first house and I'm pretty sure this will be a constant source of inspiration.
Hi. This is Shelley from the tour. Thank you for the kind words. I'd love to have you all over for some of my husband's famous brownies.
To answer your questions: the fox and the bird pillows on the couch are from Anthropologie scored at Christmas time. The curtains in the dining room are "no-tech" roman shades. The fabric is hung on a tension rod and when the sun is out, we fold it up on itself.
thank you for representing my hometown! Hehe, cute, cozy house. Love the pops of color! I'm moving soon (now out in CA). Can't wait to make my home cozy, cute and comfortable, but still stylish of course.
Lovely home. Wonderful kids' room.
Love the ABC artwork in the kids' room....got an extra one? (or an idea of how to get one?) Your home is very special.
Charming, full of character, and I love your house....every inch! Love how you used your space so well! Did you paint your brick fireplace yourself? Can you tell me your process?
Hi Raivyn. Shelley here...get some alphabet letters--I used eeBoo: Happy Parade Alphabet Cut-Out Letters--and glue them to a canvas. Thank you!
This is so amazing! I wish I could visit. :)
Love it.... fun, comfortable, inviting. Great job on the handmade curtains, the finishing touch.
Great home. Love the bathroom.
Wow, so cute and cozy. I am in love with the orange accents in your kitchen. Nice job!
Love your home! So charming!
I LOVE your home! It is so inspirational! We also live in a similar sized house with two kiddos (a bit younger) and I'm glad to see you can have such a cozy house with "smaller" space. Do you mind if I ask what the storage sleeves are in your "living room" that you hung the changing art? What a great idea! My daughter has taken to just taping her's to the living room wall, I think these would work better. (ps-your sewing skills rock too!)!
Resistance is futile! I love it! I too love the white Scandinavian interiors but I love colour even more. Great home.
Just wonderful.
Interesting that the home is chock-a-block filled to the top with amazing textiles, colors, artwork, books and other good stuff but is also incredibly organized.
Quite inspirational.
Thank you for showing us your home.
(cute kids too!)
Are those candles at the head of the bed?
Your house tour was the first thing I looked at on the internet today, and it's just made me so happy! Thank you. :))
I love this place, thanks for showing it. As others above have said, it's great to see a home that people live in. It's particularly inspiring to see a beautiful place that incorporates the needs of adults and children. So wonderful how everyone seems to be welcome in every room. It just says home to me. (And I too would love the Julia Child circles on the floor to keep things in their place!)
I also love everything about this house. My favorite is the kitchen- that shade of green is beautiful and I adore all the orange accents. You get the feeling that every single thing in this house is a treasure to the family- like they spent years scouring the world to find exactly that blue yarn-holder side table thingy. Lovely!
I really adore it.
Love it! thanks for all the details, I now know about Rejuvenation. Undergoing a kitchen remodel myself, and yes I do know those wood-look tiles as I just ordered some lovely Italian ones! I am hoping they are sturdier than the wood they are replacing.
Lonibelle, I'd love to see your kitchen when it's done. I'm excited for you! Rejuvination has amazing customer service and lights. If I ever move, I'm taking my kitchen fixtures with me.
Gomphrena, I did paint the fireplace brick--just primed then painted. I probably used Kilz primer. I've painted the living room 4 colors in 7 years, so there are lots of layers of paint, too...
Dariam, I picked up the art sleeves that make up the kids' art gallery at a local shop, but I've found similar ones online by googeling 'archival print protectors.' Rexart.com and printsleeves.com carry them, but without the grommets on the top. To stick them to my wall, I used 3M's velcro command strips. Those are wonderful because I've found I need to take the sleeves down to load them properly. Be prepared to restick them after your toddler has a fit: my son has been known to flick a whole row off the wall when mad. (It's actually pretty funny.)
Thanks for the wonderful comments, everyone. This has been a very good day! Shelley
This is by far the best house tour I've seen on AT - wonderful house full of personality!
Amazing house tour! Love the curtains, the colors, the crafts....well done from a fellow costumer!
Your house reminds me of my favorite houses in Austin! Small, cozy, and quirky. Lovely.
Our house looks to be the size of yours, and I'm always looking for storage space savers that don't look institutional. So: can you tell me where you got the over the door hooks for your bedroom closet door? And the bathroom medicine cabinet? Thanks!
Love, love, love every single little detail! So great!
Love it! Warm, cozy, colorful & it looks like someone actually lives there. I wish I had a fireplace
so I could steal your idea. It’s a great place to raise children.
I NEVER comment on AT posts (even the super awesome ones), but I had to sign in to comment on this one. This house is absolutely perfect. So lived-in, so loved, so cozy, and aesthetically, it's all kinds of awesome. I'm saving it for future inspiration - love every single corner of your beautiful home! Thank you for sharing!
Love your color combinations! Your house is such a beautiful place to raise a family! Would love to know what paint color is used in the kitchen?
Hi, NJModernist. My mom lives in Austin. It's like a sister city to Madison. The door hanger in my bedroom is almost certainly from Target. The medicine cabinet was purchased from a carpenter via ebay about 5 years ago, but it was a great deal. I wish I could tell you more.
TPORWOLL, hello. The kitchen color is Behr Premium Plus Kitchen & Bath Scotland Road.
ELLABEE, yes, those are candles at the head of the bed, but they are battery operated.
What a beautiful home you have made. Love the Keep Out sign in the kids' bedroom.
"The round end table was thrifted at St. Vincent DePaul’s."
I'm sorry, but no. I will not accept "thrift" as a verb. Especially since "bought" or "purchased" would make more sense. STOP IT AT ONCE!
The house is awesome, by the way.
what are those round glass art display thingies called?
Wow! Such an incredible, cozy, warm home! Great job! Love the juxaposition of the modern zigzag bowls with the antique chest. Genius. The orange and green/blue pallet in the kitchen...gorgeous! Love the window treatments...they don't detract from the beauty of the vintage windows. Truly the BEST home tour I have seen. Thank you Apartment Therapy for bringing us such inspiration!
I love this house! It is so warm and welcoming I feel like I could pop around with cookies just to say hello. Pity I'm on the wrong continent... and in the wrong hemisphere. I would love to bring some of this atmosphere to my own home!
Love, love, love it! One of the best AT homes ever. It's for homes like this that we all come to this site. The abundance of cosy textiles, wonderful art and the fact that this looks like a really loved and happy home - what we all aspire to. if my home looked one tenth as good as this I would be so happy. It's truly delightful in every way. I'd love to pop by if I lived in the neighbourhood! Totally inspiring and wonderful. I also love the fact that that the children's rooms look like children's rooms with tons of stuff, unlike some rooms you see where all the kids' stuff seems to have been squirreled away out of sight!
I love your taste ! However, you have a bit too much stuff for me. Take the living room sofas: how many pillows do you need ?? I'd be afraid to sit there. Why not rotating them, since each of them is beautiful ? You'd see them more and take some weight off the room. Same goes for the kitchen: how do you cook with so much on the counters ?
However, the colors, the textures and the feeling in general is amazing. I'd love to hang out there ! Can I steal your bathroom ?
Amazingly full without feeling too crowded. The perfect balance between decorated and lived-in!
I love your home, warm, real, and beautiful, and it's all for the people who live there, not for show.
Your paper fire is a lovely idea, I'd love to know how you made it. Our fireplace looks a bit bleak in the spring/late summer when it's just not cold enough to light a proper fire and this would give a lovely glow to gather round.
Thanksfor sharing your home, it's wonderful.
The clouds on the kid's room ceiling!!!
Hey, you guys were supposed to "keep out" of the kids room... is there no privacy left in this world?
;)
I think you can't have too many pillows in a house with kids. They get tossed all over the place for naps and games and forts.
I love the painted door… I was in Philadelphia’s Society Hill area last weekend, and every door is painted a different color. It’s really charming and unexpected on an otherwise old and historic home.
One of the happiest, coziest, most-lived-in-est (don't get me grammar police!) house tour I've seen on AT for ages. I love your home, and how it buzzes with personality. I want to move in!
@wayson- They are called cloches (not sure if that's the right plural) or bell jars.
I am in love. I love every room of this house tour and that hardly ever happens! Congratulations.
Love all of it! it's so warm and joyous and interesting, but also crisp and put-together and thoughtful. pretty amazing combination.
God all these AT homes look the same, maybe because the same aesthetic is applied to each one. sigh.
A lovely home. It feels purposeful and organized, not staged. I really like that it is under 2000 square feet & areas are multipurpose (thinking of dining room). Really nice! I would love to see more like this. :-)
We recently bought a home in Madison, built in 1935. It's an almost-identical floor plan to yours (minus the designated entryway, which we've considered adding on, plus our back door appears to be in a different place). There are a handful of these homes throughout town, and I've always wanted to see the inside of one, to see how others have designed around some of the constraints (for example, the relatively narrow living room). Your home is an incredible inspiration. Thank you for sharing this! I think your house tour just made my entire month.
As Liz Lemon once said, I want to go to there! I love every bit of this home. I want all the textiles and pillows, they're all so adorable and cosy looking.
Where is the coffee table in the living room from? I'm looking for a similar one.
Can you tell me where the shower curtain and towels are from?
CAILO, come over! email me at shelley.cornia@mac.com
KATY T, (I love Liz Lemon!) the coffee table is a media console from Target. (I papered over the sliding doors--I don't like to look at stuff if it's not visually helpful). When I moved the TV to the basement, I made the console a games cupboard/coffee table.
RMIN, the shower curtain and towels are Fieldcrest Luxury from Target. The stripe color is espresso.
Love the coziness in this house, but a tad bit too cluttered maybe? How do you keep up with the dusting and cleaning?
I find there's a bit too much going on as well -- the first thing that comes to mind is all the dusting.... but I'm going through a de-cluttering phase in my own home right now.
I also agree that there's a consistent personality and lived-in quality that come across here, so kudos for that.
So cozy and inviting! This is how I want my own home to look. Simply lovely!
Love your home! Love that a place right here in Madison is getting so much love! it should - it is lovely! Kudos from a fellow Madisonian!
What a lovely home. A perfect mix of colorful, stylish, and cozy. Some people have commented on the "clutter", but I can actually imagine a family living here - you guys have stuff! A complete lack of stuff doesn't seem realistic to me, especially with kids, so kudos for you to finding a way to put it all together.
LOVE seeing a home from my hometown showcased on Apartment Therapy!
Great home, so warm and welcoming. Reminds me of my grandparents' home in Ohio, in a good way :-) Can you tell us where you got the artwork by the kitchen window? My grandmother gave me her bowl that looks just like the one in the middle picture (and I still have it, 30 years later).
Cute house! I envy the landscaping (the current bain of my existence at home.) Thank you for showing mostly long shots of the rooms instead of a million little vignettes. It's obvious you've put a ton of hours into making your space perfect
This could possibly be my dream cottage...darling.
Very nicely done. Really love your window treatments. I don't know if I'm brave enough for such dark painted walls - but they look great. Thanks for sharing!
WOW! Just like everyone else has already mentioned, this is one of the most inspiring, lovliest homes ever showcased on an AT tour. I think everyone is responding to the feeling that you cultivate so well. Your home says "Welcome, come on in and be your best, most creative self." What a great space to live and grow. Thanks for letting us in. :-)
LOVE your home! I want to live there! Very Madison and very cozy.
@ARCHIE29 Hi. How do I keep up with the dusting? My master plan began 8 years ago when I had a child. Now that child, in exchange for living with me and eating my food, dusts every Saturday. I also vacuum a lot. I love vacuuming.
@DURGA All three prints by the kitchen window are from an old calendar! I love that bowl print, too. Something about the shape and heft of a bowl like that means home made biscuits, don't you think?
Thank you all for your kind words.
Love love love this home. So creative. So colorful! But most of all, I love that you took the time to explain each photo. I wish all the House Tourians did the same.
Love love love love!!!!!
For a person like me who prefers ultramodern aesthetics, there are so many elements in this house that, for me, would automatically read "grandma" in virtually any other house, but somehow, amazingly, everything works here. It takes a very, very rare talent to achieve such a perfect balance between the traditional and the modern. Looking at the pictures, I was overcome with joy and wonder in spite of myself. This seems like a home where good things happen.
I am in love with this house and everything in it. I can just move straight it in..sigh. Thanks for sharing this house AT. It has given me so much inspiration to improve my place.
Sweet sweet home. The window treatments have re-charged my energies ... love the patterned Roman shades. Wishing you great times as you continue to build a warm and loving place.
What a beautiful home. My husband is from Madison so naturally I was thrilled to see your home. We actually have the same green and brown lamp that you have in your bedroom. I was so inspired to see the shade that you chose for it. Where did you get it? We got our lamp at an auction of our current house, where did you find yours? It's one of my favorites.
I love this house tour!
I can feel the love in your home. I think the pockets for the kid's artworks is a brilliant idea. I also, love the color of your bathroom walls, what paint did you use?
great job on all the window treatments, really caught my eye and very inspiring.
@LAURIEG Hi there! My lamp was a gift from a friend. The lampshade is from Target, but it was in their seasonal section. You could probably make a chevron shade with some painters tape and gold paint if you cannot find a similar one in the market. Thanks for your comments!
It is absolutely crazy how alike me and the people that decorated this house are. This is my style exactly. I LOOOOOVE it!!!!!! Your home is the MOST beautiful thing I have EVER seen!
Very nice.
I love everything about your home. Seriously love it. I'm looking for a blue for my daughter's room, and I think I saw it in your kids' room. Do you remember the brand/name of it? (Fingers crossed. Blues are hard!)
@Shelleycornia-- love your home! From where did you purchase the pockets that you keep your kids art work? Please tell me more. Thanks!
Hello @CYMBIDY. The blue in the kids' room is from Home Depot Behr "Pooh's Favorite Things." The ceiling is a slightly lighter shade, but I don't remember the name and I didn't see it on this site http://disneyhome.com/disney_color/swatches.html, but it had Christopher Robin in the name. Hope that helps. (I agree about blues--I painted my living room blue (4 paint jobs ago) and it looked like a swimming pool.)
Hi @MJAAY Rexart.com and printsleeves.com carry the archival print protectors, but without the grommets on the top. (I got mine second hand.) I believe printsleeves offers them in white and black. I used 3M hanging velcro strips to mount them to the wall.
I wish I could add a superlative, but I'll just say...
I live in Madison.
I'll be over in an hour for my in-person tour!
This home makes my heart skip beats. Love it.
Holy heck this is an amazing home! Best house tour yet, and I agree with the previous commentor that I love the description with each photo.
This is my go to for future inspiration on my own home. Thank you for sharing with us!
Love it. So cozy. Love all your wall colors, especially the bathroom.
I enjoyed reading your post introducing your home. Extremely well written with great warmth and affection for your home and surroundings.
Another Madisonian here. So nice to see this post! This is a classic Madison '30s cottage. I love how everything is done here, except for one thing--I NEVER find anything good on the Madison Craigslist. No fair!
P.S. Great photography and writing...love the captions.
I don't think that I have ever spent so much time on a single house tour! I love this tour so much. This is a home that exudes warmth and happiness. The captions were terrific; I wish that every tour would include them. And, I couldn't appreciate more the detailed sourcing. I've bookmarked every one. I will definitely be ordering the print that you used in your bathroom. It is perfect! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home and providing so much inspiration!
Amen to all the other effusive posters!
It's gorgeously unpretentious and feels 'done' yet undone. Real people really live here!
Of everything I've seen on AT, I think this is the house tour that's easiest to appreciate while being least like my own style. Which, to me, is what AT is for--because it challenges our assumptions and expands our horizons. Brava, Shelley :)
I couldn't love this home more. I feel like I know the family just by looking at the photos. (And the kids' names are great, too!) I get a lot of inspiration from this house tour.
I commend you on the style, charm, and personality you give to your home. I saved so many of your photos for future reference because of the happiness that emits from them. Thank you for being a reminder that we don't need a house full of designer goods to create a beautiful home filled with love.
Yay to Madison (another Madisonian here)! And yay to your house. Love all the personal touches. It fairly bursts with creativity, but then I also love how many things you have sourced from Target. :) Great job.
Beautiful, and thank you for House Tours with photo captions !!!
Yes indeed! I agree with all the adoration expressed for your home - it is just so lovely, thank you for the inspiration!
Can you tell me what colour you used on the front door you are peering out of? Love that shade of yellow!
Thank you!
@SESC Thank you for your appreciation. This house tour has really been an uplifting experience for me. The door color is Lemon Curd by Dutch Boy in a high gloss finish.
What a beautiful home! Love it. Looks like a fun home to relax and enjoy family and friends.
