Each year paint company Sherwin Williams selects a color of the year. As 2013 approaches, their on-trend color for the new year has been announced.
The color is Aloe, and it is part of their "Vintage Moxie" collection.
Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams' director of color marketing, explains:
This is no ordinary pastel — Aloe is funky and glamorous, demure and free-spirited. While Aloe's vibe can verge on retro, when paired with caviar blacks, crisp whites or soft grays, suddenly Aloe has a new soul and attitude. And Aloe is highly adaptable, making it a perfect pick for everyday spaces such as a breezy sunroom or a well-dressed living room.
What do you think of Aloe?

"What do you think of Aloe?"
Seems like an ordinary pastel to me.
not a fan. Too hospitalish for me.
Good to know the color I painted my kitchen 7 years ago is 2013's color of the year!
Looks like celadon, which is just fine with me.
There were a lot of mint and jade colors at Fashion Week, makes sense that it would carry on over to home decor as well. This particular shade reminds me of a 1960's kitchen but I could see it working in an art deco room or modern scheme with gray as well.
medicine cabinet green, methinks
This is one of my absolute favorite colors. I'm a big Jadeite collector. I think there's just something so pretty about a minty bluish green. I don't think I'd paint an entire room with a ton of wallspace this color, but in a kitchen where most of the wall space is taken up by cabinets and backsplash, this would be very pretty. Also, this would look awesome as an accent wall.
<thumbs up>
Looks a bit like the Tiffany blue color that was so in (when combined with brown/black) some 7-8 years ago. It was trendy then, and it looks trendy now.
Agree with the non-fans. Not fond of green in general. Does look like hospital green to me, too.
Looks like the color used to paint many an office circa 1959.
It always amuses me when experts proclaim a color of the year. I have this non-scientific theory that this is always the least-selling color given a new name with a modern description thus insuring all the trend followers rush out to buy it saving it from extinction. Hey, trendy maketing works, that's a fact.
Truth is, any color is lovely and, um, even trendy in a eclectic sory of way (ack, i hate that word 'trendy'!) when it reflects the owner's personality & is used in the right setting. I have several posts here bookmarked which reveal rooms with colors and/or shades I personally have a strong distaste for...all of which strike some chord in me & inspire me to see these colors in a new light. I've even tried a few in small doses with surprising results.
It's refreshing to walk into the *unexpected* in a friend's house, even when it's admittedly 'not my style'. Not so much to see the latest 'color of the year' plastered on everyone's walls. B.o.r.i.n.g.
*sort* of way...not sory
sorry, lol
I like it; nevertheless, where is the "funk" in it? A true "verge of retroe?" Haven't we been doing this for a few years now???
Like it; though maybe lighter and a bit bluer; a true celadon. Understand where the 'hospital green' people are coming from. It is also kind of an '80s jadeite color which doesn't seem that long ago.
Yeah, where is the funk in it?
Not my kind of colour.
Love it. Several rooms in my house are that color and the exterior of the house is in a darker shade of that color. I built the house in 2010, so I guess I was early to the party!
Welcome to or school cafeteria. In the event of an atom bomb, du k under the table and cover your eyes with your hands.
I like it...as an accent color. Entire walls would be...disturbing.
The bathrooms in the basement of my elementary catholic school were painted that color. Creeps me out!
Looks like turquoise on my computer screen. I'd have to see it in a room to see if I like it.
I think it would look less hospital if it had a little blue in it. But then it would likely look like Wythe Blue, which is a far more appealing color.
Reminds me of hospitals, schools and office buildings. Not a big fan. It's one of those colors that always looks cheap to me.
On my screen it looks like a deep celadon to me. I love that color as a timeless accent. In general I'm in favor of all colors that evoke water and I can't resist the word "moxie."
It's 1983 all over again.
Be patient, Sherwin-Williams. You can't force the pendulum; just wait for it to swing back on its own.
NOT the green of an actual aloe plant! Ugly, boring, institutional. Fail.
Love this colour - from your photo. On Sherwin Williams' website it's a bright mint - which I do not like.
Try it with a pale copper.
Looks like my bedspread. Which only works for me because it's surrounded by white and a lighter pale robin's egg blue. I like all the blue-green varieties, but I agree that this wouldn't be comfortable as a primary wall color.
I love it! :)
I really like it too. Part of the wood floor in my kitchen is painted with a similar color (no doubt to hide some damage to the floor) and I've decorated my whole apartment around this color. It combines well with the dark browns and whites and is beautiful and serene.
I really like it but I like most shades in the family of turquoise and aqua blue. But as a "new" colour of the year? Not so new. If you're a follower of the average lifestyle and home/DIY blog, this type of shade has been used a million times in the past several years for the average furniture and household paint jobs. Just google Krylon Ocean Breeze, Krylon Catalina Mist or Rustoleum Aqua. Considering Sherwin Williams owns Krylon this isn't a surprise. They know their audience and what colours have been selling.
I'd paint my asylum cell walls with it.
Bilious, imo. Makes me feel slightly queasy. The 50's called. They want their paint color back.
It's very similar to the color of the cubicle walls that surround me now...
Color is straight out of a 1950s grade school.
