Are you ready for an amazing transformation and modernization? Check out Shevon's recent kitchen renovation! She wrote and told us a little bit about the project: "My boyfriend and I moved into our little home 6 months ago...
Our semi-detached home on the east end of Toronto was built in the 1930s. Since the heart of the home is in the kitchen we decided to do that part of the house first. Which also included removing the popcorn ceiling on the main floor, adding pot lights in the front/living room and adding wainscoting in the dining & living room. Took about 3 months and a lot of ordering in. :) "
It looks fabulous - thanks, Shevon!

Gorgeous!
I haven't seen many with dark cabinets like this and a white counter, and I really like it!
Stunning! I want your kitchen. And it's gray, one of my favorite colors.
I want to redo mine - unbelievably, your old cabinets are identical to mine. Did you use Ikea cabinets and bar stools?
Some more info on the kitchen, please.
Nice job and I too am not a big fan of this combo. What is the wood species?
where did you get those back splash tiles from?
Very nice! I have a similar color scheme in my kitchen. It's nice to see it in someone else's home. Validates my choices, you know? Really, it's lovely. Congrats on the remodel.
bravo for SUCH a great job! love the cabinets, tile and backsplash...all are so chic and gorgeous! hopefully you patted yourselves on the back and kicked back with a bottle of bubbly to celebrate...what an accomplishment!!! cheers

You did a beautiful job; I really love the cabinets and the floor. Everything looks just great.
Do you have any information on budget or a more detailed timeline? That information would be super helpful to those of us considering similar projects!
Great job! Love the cabinets!!! Are the countertops quartz? I just renovated my kitchen and it's very similar! Only I embraced the browns instead of grays.
Well done!! Enjoy it!
LOVELY!
This really is stunning. I LOVE your cabinets, especially how the wood grain runs horizontal instead of vertical. You've done what I've always thought was difficult since I love darker colors: have a bright, not-heavy kitchen, without the sterility of all-white (which I hate). Lovely.
Now I have kitchen envy!
It looks incredible! I want it!!!
personally i don't like dark cabinets but they really look handsome! awesome job!
it's nice, I like the large format floor tile and the way it's laid. But the rest is just IKEA, totally well done but a little showroomy.
I have the floor tiles in mettallic gray laid brick style in my kitchen with white cabinets. I love it!
Love, LOve, LOVE this kitchen!!! I'm holding my breath until I get one just like it!!
Backsplash is stunning. It's the finishing touch, really. Bravo. With those sliding glass doors visible from the next room, you must get so much extra light. I'd love to see an evening shot with the red hues reflecting off the countertops, and a warm yellow glow on the cabinets.
Would love to learn what the budget was and what countertops this is. Thanks!
Awesome! Congrats on the new place!
I used the same cabinets and the same countertop (I think). It's IKEA Nexus Brown (a newer color) and Caesarstone in Blizzard. Those also appear to be IKEA handles. I'm still deciding on backsplash colors/finishes, though.
eec007 - plus your dimensions into the IKEA Kitchen Planner and click on the last tab for the total for the cabinets. For sinks and faucets, check out Overstock.com. Caesarstone counters are about $55-65 per sq ft dep. on the sink cutouts/complexity.

Eek - eec007 - I meant, PLUG your dimensions into the IKEA Kitchen Planner...
BTW, your countertop provider may charge you extra to install plywood on top of the IKEA cabinets (this is needed) - try to negotiate it into the price. I was also able to negotiate 1/2 off the sink by having my counter guy order/install it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE what you did!!! I am considering a similar palette for my kitchen and did check out what Ikea has to offer. Please do advise where the cabinets and countertop are from. We were looking at the Caesarstone in white from Ikea and my husband was not sold on it...once he sees how fab it looks from your pics, I think I can seal the deal ; ) Thanks for sharing!!
I love it!
For those of you wondering about timeline, I can help you out a little bit by going over mine. I have about 3/4 of these cabinets, for reference. We did this in the past year - so it's still fresh in my mind. We loooooove the cabinets!
We demo'd the old cabinets and tile in one weekend. Careful taking down the upper cabinets because they may be attached to each other instead of individually to the wall (eek - we had 2 cabinets come down on us). Schedule in an additional day and a half/two days to patch up any drywall, sand and repaint (depends on the extent of the damage from demo).
You can put together the cabinet boxes (without attaching doors) in a weekend (Sat & Sunday). They put together almost exactly like the IKEA Billy shelving.
Schedule in yet another weekend to install the upper and lower cabinets. Some of this time is prep and leveling of the cabinets before installing them.
The upper cabinets are clipped into a rail that will be drilled into the studs on your wall. The lower cabinets are just drilled into the wall and sit on legs or a plinth. Schedule in more time if you have complicated fridge cabinets, appliance garages, wine inserts, etc. For those of you that aren't handy, I know that my local area has a number of installers who charge $99 per cabinet to assemble/install. We were lucky to have handy family members.
The drawers can get assembled fairly quickly after the first one. You install the drawer rails into the side of the cabinets and it was fairly easy (2 screws each). The hard part was measuring correctly because the IKEA documentation isn't explicit about which holes the screws go into.
Installation of the countertop takes about 2-4 hours depending on the size of your countertop. That includes the installation of the plywood on top of the cabinets, installing little leveling pieces, screwing in the sink and doing any last minute cutting of the countertop to get it flush with the wall. Finally, they apply silicon along the back edge of your counter where it meets the wall. FYI - your installer will come about 1-2 weeks prior to measure your countertop area (the cabinets MUST be installed for them to do this). This takes less than an hour.
My biggest tip is to make sure that you have accounted for all the outlets you need prior to installation. :) We forgot that the washer/dryer needed an outlet - so had to install an additional one for the fridge. Ooops! :)
Chic, modern. Brilliant choice of backsplash tile.
you can get stainless tiles like these (and other sizes) at theglassmosaicoutlet.com.
information please on cabinets and counter - this is what I am looking for, don't think it is Ikea.....

Thanks again...We really enjoy our new kitchen and we can't wait to start the basement :D
Agreed! What kind of white counters are these?
love it! and the lights are great.
wow, that price tag....yowch...suddenly my own dreams of remodeling have been put in perspective :)
apf - you can spend as much and as little as you'd like. If you want a new kitchen, you can make it happen. Don't give up your dream!
I know what it's like to try to figure out the final cost - because it's a such a big step to undertake. Here's our budget breakdown.
I feel like our budget was pretty big (for us...) and I see how you could have cut it down. Cheaper countertops for now (IKEA melamine), cheaper faucets, no washer/dryer hookups, cheaper floor (vinyl or cheap tile), cheaper ikea cabinets (we went with a mix of the middle-ranged Nexus and the high-ranged Abstrakt white), more DIY on drywall, etc.
As well, our house was a foreclosure with open walls and hanging electrical - a normal kitchen will require less labor. On the plus side, we paid a handy cousin to install the kitchen cabinets.
Our total for our kitchen was about $10,800 - though we didn't upgrade our dishwasher, stove or fridge or backsplash (still deciding - but shouldn't cost over $500 total).
Countertops - $1600
Cabinets - $3900
Wood floor install - $1500
Faucet - $175 (Hansgrohe on eBay)
Shelves - $50
Plumber - Washer/dryer hookups - $1100
Labor - $2300 - basically gutted the walls to the studs (we replaced a moldy wall, moved around some walls, drywalled open walls, patched holes in the ceiling, upgraded electrical, relocated drain lines for dishwasher, install gas line for stove, added outlets, had the contractor demo the floor, had a cousin install the cabinets, etc)
Handles - $100
Paint - $75
Cabinet demo/backsplash - $0 - DIY
Cabinet assembly - $ 0 - DIY
------------------
Total $10,800
We're located in Los Angeles - labor may be higher/lower in your particular area.
Also keep in mind that Shevon quoted Canadian dollars. Things are ALOT more expensive in Canada - including appliances, IKEA Cabinets, etc.
Wait, this was 20K and you did yourself?
I love it though and I, took, live in an east end Toronto home from the 1920's but I was hoping you would have said 10K or so.
20K is expensive even for a full contracting job. But then again, you did electrical (which is at least $5000 with a master electrician) and you installed a whole new counter. But it's incredible that it cost that much without a contractor.
Did you use a contractor? Maybe I missed that.
Simply gorgeous. I love the backsplash.
