Shiitake Mushroom Mini-Farm

Discovered at a friend's this past weekend, this is a log with shiitake mushrooms growing on it that are deliciously edible and will keep growing for up to five months. While the food is a draw, the logs are wild to look at. I see these becoming a design trend. :)

Besides Far West Fungi, there is also another great source in Lost Creek Shiitake Mushroom Farm in Oklahoma. They are a mom and pop business and sell a number of log kits that will keep growing for four years. This is what they say: "They grow in room light and room temperature and will produce every two months for about four years. Immersing the log in cold water and then soaking it for 24 hours “shocks” it and triggers the fruiting cycle. Mushrooms sprout in 6-10 days, yielding 1/4 - 1/3 pound or more. Then the log “rests” until the next fruiting, requiring soaking every two weeks in nonchlorinated room-temperature water."
