Shoe cabinets look like such space hogs for the amount of benefit. Take your shoes off at the door, and put them away where they really live, why dontcha?
We're also take-off-shoes-at-the-door people, and I love the idea of this--shoes neatly tucked away out of sight. But realistically I know my boyfriend will never make the extra effort of putting them inside! A hands-free solution makes more sense anyway, so we go for lining them under a bench by the front door.

Because some of us live in climates that necessitate shoe storage at the point of entry.
I live in a Canadian prairie province, no way in hell would I put my wet boots in my closet with my clothes. Snow, salt, dirt or sand, none of that stuff belongs anywhere near my clothes.
Summer may be a bit different, but Canadians in general do not wear shoes in the house. Therefore it just makes sense to keep shoes at the door, so you can put them on as you leave.
