Inheritance: Eclectic Vintage Treasures

Store Profile

Store History

  • Founded: 2004
  • Founded by: Dan Zelen and Michael William Andrews
  • Headquarters: Los Angeles, California

Dan Zelen opened the store Zelen in 2004. He transformed a crumbling former loft and storeroom into a unique gift and design shop. Zelen carried a mixture of modern and vintage furniture, accesories, artifacts, and curiousities. Michael William Andrews took over the store in 2008 and has continued Dans’ eclectic design asthetic and detailed curation. Recently Michael changed the name to Inheritance.

With a name like Inheritance, you can surely bet that everything under its vaulted ceiling was a nod to generations past. Mike Andrews took over for Dan Zelen in 2009, when the store was called Zelen. Taking his time curating pieces and sourcing different accessories, Mike took over after he felt that the aesthetic carefully conveyed his point of view and style.

Mike Andrews has an eye for antiques and nostalgic pieces from the past. Having designed accessories and furniture for the store in the past, he plans to evolve more of his own designs eventually. "I do some interior design" he explains, "but mostly I’m in the shop drinking lots of coffee and moving things around." His love of handmade and handcrafted pieces shows in the various pottery and table ware that is sold in the lower level of the shop. However upstairs, where we find vintage office accessories such as old letter openers and staplers, you can find current jewelry designers and lighting accents. Mike explained his appreciation, "...The craftsmanship of fading arts like silversmithing. Old books. Folk art. Ceramics. I like my objects like I like my people; with a story and a sense of humor."

Inheritance offers quite a different palette of ideas for everyone. "I carry modern furniture from Misewell, and RS Barcelona. Local custom wood furniture and accessories from District Millworks and Samuel Moyer. Fine china from The New English, Reichenbach and Ginori. The vintage is brought in by fellow pickers and collectors." Regardless of your style Mike feels that the most essential element in designing your home is that it be functional but still maintain some personality, "Have some fun!"
