Nomad Rugs

Store History

  • Founded: 1995
  • Founded by: Christopher Wahlgren
  • Headquarters: Noe Valley, San Francisco

Nomad Rugs got its start in my garage in San Francisco in 1995. I began importing carpets on frequent trips abroad and sold them on the sidewalk in front of my apartment on 24th Street in the city's Mission District. This little stretch of sidewalk became known as Chris' Bazaar. I've since moved up the street to a proper storefront. But I retain the same principles I've had since the beginning: offering unique rugs, great value and personal expertise.

Ask about rugs around San Francisco, and Chris Wahlgren's name will most definitely pop up. Chris is the owner of Nomad Rugs, and his motto is "walk on any art lately?" Upon entering his store, we think that's an understatement. Focusing mostly on rugs from Afghanistan and Pakistan, all of the rugs are naturally dyed and made by hand from small workshops.

Nomad Rugs is about 2,500 square feet, and there are tons of rugs piled on top of each other. If you're in the market for an oriental rug, there is no doubt in our minds that you will be able to find one here.

While digging through a pile, we happened upon these rather sleek-looking contemporary rugs.

Nomad Rugs also has a small gallery located on the second level.
