Whoa! IKEA's got a brand new wall lamp that just jumped out at me while browsing their site. Designed by someone smart (Johanna Jelinek - I just found it! Thanks to christinerenay in the comments), it's LED, swivels fully and comes in three colors. Run, don't walk.

The designer appears to be Johanna Jelinek. From the IKEA website:
Designer thoughts
“Lamps often end up in the same places on ceilings and in corners and not always where light is needed most. There’s a big need for smart lighting solutions and LED technology makes it possible. LED consists of small light diodes that are built into the lamp itself, so lamps can be made smaller and slimmer. LED is what makes it possible to fold IKEA PS 2012 wall lamp flat against the wall when you’re not using it. It’s also why it fits in every room, anywhere you need good light. And LEDs are more energy efficient than ordinary light bulbs, too.”

Before clicking; first thought of the lamp was 'paint roller'. I like it; preferably in another color. But, it seems kind of pricey for Ikea.

I like it! Anyone know if the head articulates? If so, it would be the PERFECT reading lamp for my bedroom.
LaureltQ - Yes! I first saw it as a bedside lamp but couldn't find that pic for this post. It all moves.
Thanks Christinerenay! I totally missed her name with their new layout
I've been LUSTING after this lamp since IKEA announced their PS 2012 line. I'm finally ready to buy two in black to use for bedside lamps as part of this round of The Home Cure!
So, can anyone give me an idea if the illumination seems to be about as much as an old-fashioned 60 watt bulb, or maybe 100 watts? And what happens after the LED dies? Throw the lamp out? (I'm referring to the designer's comment: "LED consists of small light diodes that are built into the lamp itself...")
From the specs, it uses 10 watts, so I suspect it's using a 3 or 5 watt LED, which would make it about 45-60 watt incandescent. I have the Jansjo and it's rated at 3 watts, using a 1 watt LED and it's bright for desktop use. LEDs should last about 20,000 hours; so if you use it 5 hours a day, that'll be about 10 years of use.
I have two of these as bed reading lamps for my two boys. It's very cute in their room, and provides very nice, bright light for reading on the bed. Hope the LED light never breaks :)
I have always wanted a lamp like this for my bedroom. I currently have a desktop lamp, also from Ikea - forgot the name - which has served me well for at least years.
If the lamp sells for $49 in the US, it means it will probably cost $75 in Canada. Bummer.
CanadianMango - I just bought these over the holidays (in Ontario) and they are $59.99.
Abcornwell - they are actually pretty bright, brighter than I thought they would be. THe light is a bit white though, not a soft warm light, but as you can totally articulate the head of it you can turn it downwards (towards the wall) to make the room a bit dimmer. It's a really beautiful design though and I think the LED should last for years.
@rmbnn
I have yet to see an LED fixture that wasn't significantly more expensive than the traditional kind. Not to mention, Maxwell is likely to have salt and pepper shakers that cost more than $49, so in that respect it seems like a bargain.
@kgirl14, thank you! That's good news. I am always put off by how much higher our Ikea prices are (in comparison to the US). Often, they are 30% higher on this side of the border but perhaps things have changed since I checked the last time.
IKEA also has a sharp, modern, pendant LED fixture.

It comes in black, a bright ocean blue, or taxi cab yellow. The light Maxwell features comes in black or white, as well as lipstick red.
I just drove 2 hours to ikea with the intention of buying this lamp. I was super excited about it untill I looked on the tag and discovered the built-in LED would only last for a limited amount of time ( 20,000 hours or about 10 years). I was so bummed and had to pass. I was really looking at this as somewhat of a design investment ( although cheap and hopefully wouldn't break on its own!),not something that will inevitabally end up in the trash.
