Tonight I'm drinking peppermint tea out of a large Teema mug and, aside from Daniel Smith's handmade porcelain ones that cost a good deal more, these are my go to's for my everyday home and my clients. I first saw the whole Teema collection at OK in Los Angeles years ago and it was the mugs that caught my eye. I just wanted them immediately. There's something about mugs that can do that to you. Teema is the name given to the Iittala collection designed in 1962 by Kaj Franck (1911-1989). Still in production, it is lush AND spare (if such a thing is possible) and based on familiar and basic shapes – a circle, a square and a rectangle. The mug comes in two sizes, 10oz and 13oz, and is part of a whole dinner line that also shouldn't be missed.

These are my only dishes (white), along with Iittala Kartio glasses (clear). Then again, look where I'm from! :D
annika, that's what i aspire to! my kitchen will eventually be all iittala :) i fell in love when i spent the summer in helsinki last year.
Thank you Maxwell! This could be the mug I've been searching for. I've been looking to replace some mugs that I had gotten several years ago at the former store "Adhoc". Both the store and the mugs are long gone. I thought the maker was Arabia Finland but it looks very much like this one. They also had a whole line of the dishware.
futopiaco - the manufacturer for iittala mugs is arabia finland ceramics, but the designer for that particular mug is kaj franck :)
Iittala = glassware, Arabia = ceramic ware, Hackman = cookware and utensils, but it's all the same company! Confusing, yes. And I own and love all three and will continue to do so. They all make elegant, simple and everlasting products. Makes me really happy and proud to be a Finn :)
oh i feel so bad writing this cause i have a kitchen full of awesome teema...but fiskars group, which now owns and manufactures the teema line, is making more and more of it in asia, and is increasingly dodgy about it. i say this because my last order of white teema from Iittala contained dinner plates, cups and saucers, a teapot, and a milk jug (and of course it's all wonderful)...but it is all from thailand. i worry that fiskars is tarnishing this great line and i'd like them to be more transparent about their practices (for a lot of reasons). it's such an important design, emblematic of finland (and marketed as such), and so i must admit that i was sad to pay for finnish production, design, history, and craft, and receive...well i don't know.
i suppose it's like ordering a le creuset pot from the manufacturer in france...or even the new fiesta ware....and opening the box to find that it's not what they said? i'm not against outsourcing, but in certain instances, where regional ties are strongly emphasized, i think it means something to the customer. even having the option to know that certain lines or items are from elsewhere would be great. i make this complaint out of love for the line. i'd like fiskars to give a little more respect to Iittala and its workers :)
