Alabama Chanin: Handmade Textiles & Furniture

Store Profile

Store History

  • Founded by: Natalie Chanin
  • Headquarters: Florence, Alabama

We've mentioned handmade shop Alabama Chanin before, but they're back on our radar after we spotted their textiles at the Cooper Hewitt's design triennial. Although their limited edition pieces are beyond our budget, we love looking at their collections for inspiration. Almost all furniture and accessories are upcycled and pieced together from items with a storied past.

Owner Natalie Chanin is primarily a fashion designer, but she works with local artisans in her howntown of Florence, Alabama to make textiles and pieces that can be used for the home as well. All pieces are signed and numbered by the artists who created them.

The Cooper Hewitt describes the collections well: "The pieces from Alabama Chanin’s 2009 and 2010 collections are made from organic cotton with quilting, appliqué, and embroidery techniques from the Depression-era South. The garments are imbued with memory and nostalgia, representing a continuum between traditional and contemporary practice."
