Store History

  • Founded: 1912
  • Founded by: Charles H. Lembcke and John Knell
  • Headquarters: Muscatine, Iowa
  • Sister stores: HNI Corporation

If you're looking for an alternative to Steelcase or Herman Miller office chairs and systems, Allsteel manufactures chairs, file cabinets, and office tables of high quality. Many of their lines (like the Stride office system) are Cradle-to-Cradle certified, and although they're not quite as design-conscious as Knoll or Herman Miller, they carry some good-looking products with a basic, streamlined aesthetic.

Headquartered in Muscatine, Iowa, they sell mainly to corporations and architects, but they do also work with a network of retail dealers across the country. Their showroom and workplace in Muscatine was designed by well-known international firm Gensler, and it received an Excellence in Architecture award from the Chicago AIA.

They also have showrooms in Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Toronto, and Washington, DC.
