Bart Bettencourt: Green Design & Supplies

The Godfather of NYC Green. We met Bart Bettencourt a few years back at Brooklyn Designs and added him to the blog right away. Since then, green has grown and so has his business and reach. Since green design is our future, it's a good thing that SOMEONE has been doing their homework.

Bettencourt calls his company the Bettencourt Green Building Supply Co. despite the fact that he is a designer and cabinetmaker as well. His designs, featured at, made out of sustainable woods with names like Plyboo, Environ, Dakota Burl, and BIOFIBER Decorative Wheat composite...

They can be found at The Future Perfect in Williamsburg. Benches, tables and chairs are his specialty, while he also has a new line, Scrapile, in which he has collaborated with two others to perfect a process by which wood scraps are reused to make solid furniture which is beautiful to look at. Scrapile was prominently featured in the Rotunda Gallery Show, "reduce-reuse-reexamine."

Bart has aslo moved into raw materials in a big way. Bettencourt Green Building Supplies stocks the woods that it has found for its designs for sale to others at reasonable prices (hence the title, Building Supply Co.). Importing and shipping these woods is often prohibitive, but with Bettencourt's help, that is changing. You will also find flooring, wall treatments, insulation and counter tops that pass eco muster.

Problems? Bettencourt's designs are not as distinctive as we would like, and his materials take main stage. With this sort of pioneering to be done, it will grow even more exciting when riskier, beautiful and simply just more solutions overtake the Plyboo.
