We were just about to quit what has started to seem like a futile search for an affordable, modern-looking chair-and-a-half when we happened upon Bay Area Sofas. This Burlingame company specializes in custom upholstered pieces at very reasonable prices. The designs are unabashed knock-offs of popular lines from mass retailers Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, and Room & Board. This is a great resource if you're looking for transitional style in the form of a new upholstered piece at a good price and you need some customization.

Bay Area Sofas will make you a sofa, loveseat, chair, chaise lounge or sectional to your exact measurements and in a variety of fabrics that include micro fibers, prints and jacquards.

None of the styles are very daring or even original, but they do look comfy--and very much like the more expensive brands they're imitating (currently C&B's Huntley and Petrie, PB's Greenwich and Seabury, and Room & Board's Cameron and Metro. The amazing things is that these pieces are hand-made in LA and their prices that are 30-50% lower (and 10% cheaper if you pay with cash or check).

How about quality? Features include 100% kiln dried hardwood frames, "no sag" spring construction, and heavy weight insulation. Does anyone have direct experience from shopping their Burlingame Showroom? ****Update: Please be sure to read the comments below, and in this Open Thread****
