Seamus Heaney has a famous poem about a ship that appears in a monastery — its anchor dragging, it hooks into the altar rails. A crewman grapples down the rope, the monks help to free the ship, "and the man climbed back out of the marvellous as he had known it." Benjamin Hubert reminds me of that crewman, halfway between the real world and a mysterious otherworld where the regular rules of time and space don't apply, and ships can hang in the air.
Born in the UK, Hubert is a young designer — just 28 years old. He's already earned several accolades, including "Young Designer of the Year" awards from Elle Decoration UK (2010) and Elle Decoration France (2009). He's also worked with top-tier brands, from De La Espada to Magis to Casamania.
This year, his Maritime Chair debuted with Casamania. Built like a boat rather than a chair, it's made from a bowed wood skeleton that's skinned in ash plywood.
Past pieces include the smooth "pebble" line of furniture, made from polyethylene and "manufactured by a process usually reserved for outdoor furniture, making them sturdy and durable," as well as mouth-blown glass lights with cork stoppers that resemble floating buoys and paddle-shaped LED task lights made from oak and cast aluminum.
