Looking for an affordable, impressive rug by an independent designer? Look no further than Toronto's amazing Bev Hisey. Hisey was an uncontested star during Toronto's annual design week. BevHisey.com is poised to become an amazing indie alternative to larger (and more expensive) company's like The Rug Company.
Sunday saw the conclusion of Toronto's 5th annual Design Week. The collection of events, which centers around IDS (or the Interior Design Show) and complemented by smaller satellite shows, continues to blossom and make late-January an exciting part of the year here despite the cruel weather.
Bev Hisey was undoubtebly one of the strongest designers to be participating in Toronto Design Week. Hisey’s graphic, exuberant and luxe carpets and rugs were on display at three (!) different venues along Toronto’s Dundas Street West neighborhood. As furniture from reclaimed wood continues to be ubiquitous here, it was refreshing to encounter such refined and confidant designs in a medium that is infrequently executed (with great success) by an individual rather than an anonymous corporation. Hisey is also a member of Goodweave, an organization connected to the rug industry dedicated to ending child labor
Hisey’s palette, graphic designs and quality of material rival The Rug Company’s recent collections, yet are a dramatic fraction of the price. Hisey has perfected her craft, and while she has been sold in New York and other major centers, she is currently focused on the local Toronto market. Fortunately, admirers can purchase her pieces online from her excellent website. Shipping to the US is included in most prices.
While Hisey has produced a significant number of designs that are attractive and very commercial, she is an artist with a sense of humor. You know Kelly Wearstler wouldn’t have come up with a collection of round rugs based on infamous diseases (well, maybe). Kudos to Hisey for making “Cholera” and “Streptococcus” so sexy.

Bev Hisey has had her mitts in the design field for a million years. She started with fashion, and moved into home decor after the birth of her daughter in 1990. In addition, she has proven herself to be a great resource for a number of notable Canadian design talents. In May of 2002, at New York's International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), Bev launched a new line of handmade carpets, floor runners, cushions and blankets to great applause and media recognition. Since that time, Bev has been creating an ever-expanding line of quality hand-made products for the home, adding new techniques such as hand-tufting, hand-knotting, die-cutting, and silk-screening to her repertoire. Bev's products are playfully modern with classic finishings, setting her apart as a design original. Her talent for creating unexpected combinations of colours and textures inspires the eye to gaze and the hand to touch. "They're the kinds of colours you want to fall into" she says.
