German company Bulthaup is a leading high-end source for modern, minimal kitchen systems. Every kitchen is custom (in other words high quality and expensive), designed to fit snugly into the architecture of your space. Bulthaup was founded in Bodenkirchen in 1949 by Martin Bulthaup. Later, the company was taken over by his son, Gerd Bulthaup, who believed in the ideologies of the Weimar Bauhaus, which favored modern forms stripped of unnecessary decoration, a philosophy that they still hold to today. Bulthaup kitchens are based on three fundamental systems: the B1, B2, and B3 collections. Each one is geared towards a particular function and aesthetic.
B1 Collection: This is Bulthaup's least expensive collection. The aesthetic is minimal, with long horizontal drawers and no outer hardware—drawers and cabinets are designed with an angled lip that acts as a grip for opening and closing. Internal fittings are made of birch wood, and there are a number of options for external finishes: ash, walnut, stainless steel, laminate, glass, or painted wood.
B2 Collection: The idea behind this collection is to fit all the key elements of a kitchen into a compact space. There are three main components: one central workbench with sink, one cabinet for kitchen tools and pantry items, and one cabinet for larger appliances (like the oven and refrigerator). Cabinets are wood (walnut or oak), and the worktop comes in stainless steel, wood, or sandstone gray.
B3 Collection: This is Bulthaup's premium kitchen system, and it's the most expensive and customizable of all three collections. Wide countertops contain storage below, and a multi-functional wall conceals plumbing and gas lines while providing a modular system for mounting appliances, storage, and kitchen tools. Drawer and cabinet interiors can be customized to hold every type of kitchen tool. This collection also offers the widest selection of finish options: laminate in various colors, frosted glass, and several types of metals, as well as wood: ash, walnut, oak, cherry, maple, bamboo, apple, and elm.
Accessories, Dining Tables, & Chairs: In addition to their kitchen systems, Bulthaup sells minimal wood and metal dining tables with Hans Wegner chairs and barstools. They also carry smaller kitchen tools, like butcher blocks, bread baskets, serving trays, and kitchen containers. Bulthaup's US headquarters is based in Roseland, New Jersey, and they have showrooms in New York, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Boston, DC, and several other major US cities.
