When looking for window coverings for our bay windows, we went to Conrad Shades -- a store renowned for its elegantly unfussy hand-woven window coverings. Drawing inspiration from nature, Conrad Shades creates shades, drapery, and other products from handwoven natural fibers that are unmatched in their design and craftsmanship.

Conrad Shades began fifty years ago when its founder, Edie Conrad, began importing "Biri-Weaves" (handwoven wall coverings made by interweaving wheat and barley strands with silk and linen fibers) from her native Norway. In the 1960's, Edie discovered the skilled artisans and exotic natural fibers of Asia -- and thus, she started a collection of handwoven window coverings.

Conrad Shades provides many window covering options, including Roman fold shades, drapery, sliding panel systems, and cornices. The panels are minimal and structured, but have enough texture and warmth to keep them from looking too clinical. The panels also use a cord system that stacks neatly to the side or center, thus ensuring the view from you window is not obstructed.

Shades and draperies can also be ordered through Kneedler-Fauchère in San Francisco, located on Henry Adams Street.
