Design and art team Jolie Mae Signorile and Gabriel Fredericks Cohen met through a shared love for materials in 2007, and started Fredericks & Mae in 2008. They recently launched a new online shop showcasing their handmade objects, including new additions to their Endless Summer collection — perfect for road trips and long days at the beach.
Name/Title: Jolie Signorile (Mae) and Gabriel Cohen (Fredericks)
Open/launch date: We started Fredericks & Mae in 2008, but it was very small for a long time. Our current web store launched in early 2013.
Inspiration for opening: Last year, when we had a more DIY web shop, we got an e-mail from a friendly customer who told us that our web shop was "absolutely insane" — so we decided to up our game a bit. It's been so nice having a bit more direct contact with our customers, and knowing where our work is finding home.
Merchandise source: We get our materials from all over — kite paper from India, feathers from bird sanctuaries in Queens and California, wooden shapes from Ohio, and horse hair from Mongolia, just to name a few.
Best selling item: Arrows!
Your favorite item: Gabe: Cat Lures. I think they are so strange and sculptural. Jolie: Right now it's Beach Tennis.
Favorite store (other than your own): Jolie: Maryam Nassir Zadeh on 123 Norfolk St in NYC. They are the first store that ever sold our work, and whenever I am in the neighborhood I have to stop by — it's always inspiring. Gabe: De Vera on 1 Crosby Street in NYC. I always describe De Vera as the treasure store — every object in there is perfect and rare and emotional.
