Probably best known for their Provence inspired books on simple entertaining and series of vintage inspired stationery and mailing labels, French General is a treasure trove of flour sac cloth, striped linens, lavender scented candles and french ticking.
Tucked away on Riverside Drive in Atwater, French General would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. But once inside the smell of lavender hits you, the french music on the stereo invites you in and the snacks in back (celery and peanut butter) entice you to stay.
The store often holds jewelry making sessions where you can choose from the billions of vintage and vintage inspired beads to make your own bracelet, necklace or lamp tassle. But move over to the other side of the store and find vintage stationery, fleur de lis ribbons, handmade lavender candles, flour sac runners, linen napkins and the French General books 'Handmade Soirees' and 'French Inspired Home' and 'Home Sewn'.
French General is mainly a website shop, with a brick-and-mortar store on Riverside open only on Mondays from 11-4. They also open on Saturdays for workshops.
