The newest design destination to hit Jamaica Plain, Room 68, just held their official grand opening over the weekend. The shop was well received if the turnout was any indication. Designers mingled with locals and there was plenty to chat about. The overall aesthetic of the store is a bit tough to pinpoint, but once you learn a bit about the owners it all comes together. The shop showcases a number of beautiful pieces of wood furniture, both from local designers and well know wood workers. This is no doubt due in part to the fact that one of the partners in the business, Nick Siemaska, teaches furniture restoration (he also happens to be an Apartment Therapy Contributor). The layout of the shop along with the artsy, quirky housewares, has a sort of museum gift shop feel to it. One would expect this can be attributed to the fact that Brent Refsland, the creator and curator of the nearby Hallway Gallery, also has a hand in the business. Rounding out the collaboration is Eric Portnoy, a design enthusiast who had been contemplating opening up a shop for some time.
Here is what you won't find at Room 68, anything mass produced that you assemble at home with an allen wrench. What you will find? A well curated collection of finds that bring a strong element of design to any interior.
