Fredericksburg VA has long been a destination for antiques shoppers on the East Coast, and local resident Kristin Maxson has capitalized on that market, and her background at the Smithsonian, to create a home-based furniture restoration and refinishing business...
Kristin is a materials science engineer who worked on sculptures at the Hirshorn in the 1980s; she now puts that expertise to work on antique wood furniture for clients across the DC area. Kristin buys, restores, and resells antiques (like the Civil War era dresser pictured above) on Craigslist, but she is also available for in-home consultations if you have an antique that needs some help. Kristin prefers to work with a dry oil finish to soften and buff the existing varnish without removing the beautiful aged patina that most wood furniture acquires with age. She buffs out light scratches, fills in heavier gouges, reglues any loose joints, and generally returns your piece to as-new condition (without an as-new look).
Kristin doesn't yet have a website, but is very responsive to phone calls and emails. Kristin's prices are also reasonable; she recently quoted $150 for a one day job to refurbish a 40"x80" kitchen table in a client's home (stripping and revarnishing would take three days and add $225 to that quote).
If you do reach out to Kristin, please let her know you heard about HALO here at ATDC, and let us know how your project turns out- we love before and after pictures!
