Handmade Suds: Rocky Top Soap Shop

Rocky Top Soap Shop opened for business on Etsy less than a year ago, and they've already received tons of great feedback and were a Featured Seller on The Etsy Blog. I was super inspired by their message and outlook on life and handmade. Based in coastal Maine, their product is unscented and made through the cold process method that relies on the natural process of saponification...

As Rocky Top Soap Shop explains, "saponification is the chemical reaction between an acid (the oils) and a base (the lye) that results in a salt (the soap)."

And what's more, their products are made for those with sensitivities: "Whether you have senstive skin, or allergies, or are just unexplainably sensitive to the world around you, my soaps are made with you in mind. That is why my soaps remain unscented. There are no essential oils or fragrance oils added to my soaps, ever. Instead, I have created a collection of soaps with herbal infused oils specific to skin care, as well as a host of thoughtfully selected teas, clays and minerals to assist your skin in returning to its natural and healthy state of being."

Why am I so into Rocky Top Soap Shop? Besides their affordable yummy soap I'm dying to try, I'm loving their outlook on life and handmade...

When asked the question Apart from creating things, what do you do?, Rocky Top Soap Shop answered: "I have been in pursuit of a simple, self-sufficient, handmade life for years. Most of my time outside of the soap shop is spent gardening or planning next season’s garden. I like to think of it as a creative collaboration with nature. I enjoy seed saving, canning, composting, plant propagation, building greenhouses and raised beds...anything to do with providing a self-sufficient, reliable, organic food source."
