Howl Interiors was founded in 2005 by Barry Jelinski in Austin, TX. Barry has a national reputation as a talented up-and-coming decorative artist and provocateur. Howl Interiors combines handcrafted and reinvented home furnishings with classic and modern antiques to create truly inspired decorative environments. The works of Howl range from the small to the big, from the ridiculous to the sublime.
When we first met Barry Jelinski, owner of Howl, it was in his South Austin gallery/house, filled with found treasures, designed pieces and twin tabby cats. It was, as they say, "so Austin." Howl may have moved locations recently, but don't worry; it's still as charming as ever.
Now housed in a sleek modern structure a little farther south of the old location (which remains his home, by the way), the new Howl represents an intoxicating combination of all of Howl's old "what is that thing?" charm combined with a more edited and thoughtful arrangement of items. As with his old store, there are odd items that he's found through his many travels, great Mid-Century Modern finds and some of his own creations, which range from the weird to the awesome.
Many of the items in Howl have a bit of the absurd to it, but that's what makes this store such a treat to explore. You can tell each item was heavily considered before being brought into the space. This makes items that would seem impossible to match (say, a labyrinth coffee table with a taxidermy mouse inside and a flamboyantly upholstered antique wingback chair), possible. Textures play a starring role at Howl, adorning everything from a fur-covered couch to some cool, natural-inspired side tables (sculptures?).
The new location has ample parking, a wide open showroom and, a personal favorite, a big workshop in the back where Barry can spread out and make more awesome creations. You can visit Howl's website, blog and Facebook page for more information.
