This shelving system — highlighted recently in an inspiring Green Style photo — is a new approach to DIY furniture-making. Nicola Enrico Staubli designed a set of readymade clamps, which can be used to create semi-custom shelving.A customer visits his site and uses an online configurator to determine how many shelving units they want and what size, height, and depth the units should be. The configurator calculates the number of clamps the customer will need, as well as the plans for cutting plywood, MDF, or solid wood to make the sides of the shelves.
The clamps ship to the customer's home, and he or she goes to the hardware store to have the wood cut to spec. When the clamps arrive, the customer simply snaps the shelves together. If they want to modify the design, they can alter the wood and reuse the clamps.
Clamps are made from aluminum and cost $22 each. If you're making a six-unit shelf, you'll probably end up paying around $240 for the clamps. The cost of the wood is up to you.
