We had been to Juxtaposition Home a couple of times with a friend who lived in Laguna Beach and recalled it for a AT review by accident when visiting the mall it resides in on the Newport Coast a couple of weeks ago. If you aren't familar with the area you could easily drive by this high end strip mall and not realize that Jux actually exsists. Wedged between Corona Del Mar and Laguna Beach on PCH, it caters to the OC crowd that live and breathe that stretch of horribly expensive [but beautiful] real estate.

At first glance when entering the store it seems like any other home store, pretty slip covered couches, chairs, books and gifts but as you start to walk around fine details emerge. The slip covers are linen and quirky antique items start popping up such as a huge standing vintage light from an operating room, a large wooden gear standing 4ft tall, or a vintage illustration of butchers cow map. Jux's vintage pieces are sometimes oddly creepy [cow map, pinned beetles and butterflies to name a couple] but very, very cool.

Getting into Jux to photograph took a bit of work, apparently they are VERY sketchy about folks coming into to photograph [previous bad experiences with copy cats they said]. The staff gave me a "good luck" attitude when I inquired about a story but the owner is a fan of the site and via email said we could come back. A phone call to the owner when we arrived "confirming our photography ok" we saw the tight reigns on photographs again. I must say the staff was very helpful and friendly once our "security clearance" was confirmed. As expected, they were equally tight lipped about shopping trips and sources but the abundance of French, American and Chinese antiques leads me to believe the owner is a world traveler and a very keen shopping woman.

The store also features custom made furniture made from solid walnut and can be made to spec for clients needs in size and finish. As well, Their gift and book section is equally impressive a ton of really great decor books that we've never seen.

You will have to make a giant schlep to get to Jux'taposition Home unless you live on that stretch of PCH we mentioned earlier [as they do not have a website]. But if you're going to be in the area stop in you won't regret it even if it's just to lookie-loo. While you're there be sure to look up at the ceiling to note the gigantic barn/industrial fans that span 4ft or so... they are very impressive! Or if you're a fashion magazine person keep a look out for a fashion editorial that was shot at their place for an upcoming Allure Magazine piece.
