The other day, Gregory blogged planting for LA's Mediterranean Climate. Mordigan's Nurseries, on Third Street, just west of Fairfax, a sprawling gardener's resource, is a great place to start lookiing for those plants you'll need to create a climate-appropriate garden.
A calm oasis, surrounded by the chaos of The Grove and the bustling foot and car traffic on West Third, it's well-stocked with healthy plants, the key to gardening success. Now run by third generation owners, Mark Siebel and his sister, Mary Bambino, there's an attention to personal service here that you won't find at Home Depot. They know how to leave you alone to amble among the plants and, then, reappear just as a question forms in your mind. Talk to them about your situation and they'll take the time to offer suggestions about what to buy and answer your questions about how to care for it. Thinking about keeping your garden pest-free and well-nourished the natural way? Order worm castings and ladybugs here, worms too, a must for easy composting. A selection of pots – from the plain to the kitschy – doesn't hurt and they have parking, though we suggest getting here early in the morning. Later on, it gets crowded. Oh, and if it doesn't all fit into your Smart Car, they deliver.
