McGrane Design: Environmental Architecture

California firm McGrane Design recently appeared on our 2010 list of sustainable architects for being stylish, green, and focused on homes. This is an apartment building in Costa Mesa, California, that they helped to convert into green condominiums. Each unit is under 1,000 square feet, and the project offers some good insights into green renovations.

The architects coordinated replacements for all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems with high-efficiency fixtures, while designing Energy Star appliances into kitchens and laundry areas. Rather than a cookie-cutter renovation, they created each condominium as a unique space with its own aesthetic. Kitchens and bathrooms were laid out in a variety of plans, and architects varied the ceiling vaulting and beams.

In addition to design services, McGrane provides LEED consultation. Their philosophy is a site-specific approach that takes into account the context of each project, including potential for wind power, solar power, and environmental landscaping.
