In 2003, Mixture opened shop in a 1940s brick warehouse in San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood. Even in its early hours, Mixture established itself as the city's go-to source for all things modern and contemporary, from furniture to home accessories and original artwork. Today, the only word I can settle on to describe Mixture: Wow.
When I lived in San Diego, I avoided Mixture altogether because it hurt too much to see so much gorgeous stuff I'd never be able to afford. Why would I torture myself looking at tables and beds by boldface designers when my budget tops out at CB2?
On a recent trip to San Diego, however, I stopped by the MoCo mecca and was totally design-dazzled. Mixture carries a huge selection of furniture, lighting, and artwork, much of which is local. Appropriate to San Diego, they've even got a year-round outdoor area.
Sure, I can't splurge on a Pierre Paulin chair or Tom Dixon lighting fixture right now, but I definitely soaked up some interior inspiration from the store's artful layouts and vignettes. And, for those of us whose wallets are smaller than our ambitions, Mixture stocks tons of affordable accessories and gift items.
The 8,500-square-foot, three-level space opens to the street with roll-up garage doors, ushering in breezes from the nearby harbor. The open-air vibe encourages laidback browsing, and if you feel like testing out a sofa for an hour while chatting with a friend, nobody will stop you. Owners Brumby and Misti Broussard are as friendly as they are stylish.
