Canadian company Montauk makes high-end handmade furniture with a variety of custom options for people who want lots of choice when they're sofa shopping. Their couches are handmade, so standard sizes can even be adjusted on request.
Like many stores marketing their green initiatives, Montauk has a strategy to minimize their environmental impact. It's divided into tackling 3 categories: greenhouse gasses, closed loop recycling, and biodegradability. They address the first by purchasing carbon emissions offsets, the second by offering rebates on used furniture while disassembling and recycling used sofa parts, and the third by making their sofas by hand from as many petroleum-free materials as possible.
A few years ago, we read some complaints (here and here) about their customer service, and we've never ordered anything from them personally so we can't say whether it's improved or not. It should be noted that they have strict policies against returns, since each sofa is made to order. Any personal experience with the store? Add your voice to the comments below.
