Store History

  • Founded: 2012
  • Founded by: Krista Stovel, Leah Stovel and Avery Bloom
  • Headquarters: Portland, Oregon

In 2012, Krista Stovel, Leah Stovel and Avery Bloom founded Nell & Mary with the mission to create a home goods collection with a refined, unique aesthetic, while remaining environmentally and socially conscious. Every piece in the line is cut, sewn and screenprinted in their studio/micro-factory in Portland, Oregon. All printed artwork is original to their studio, and they source materials which are either “rescued” (deadstock) or organic, and screenprint with water based inks.

Name/Title: Nell & Mary

Launch date: February 2012

Inspiration for opening: In 2010 my sister Leah and her husband Avery moved their clothing company (which is now our sister brand Make It Good) up from Oakland to Portland, where I was living. After a few months of living in the same town, we decided to start a home line together, which is now Nell & Mary. My background is in interior design, and we were able to adapt all the production, sourcing and general wealth of knowledge Leah and Avery had from the apparel industry to jump starting Nell & Mary.

Merchandise source: All of the products in our online shop are designed and made in our studio here in Portland, Oregon. For our current collection (SS14) we freshened up our color palette quite a bit. We said goodbye to the mid-century gold, teal and tomato we’d used for our first couple of years, and replaced it with apricot, indigo and mint. When we went to shoot our new work, we took a lot of inspiration from the content of art in our tea towels (tropical fruit, asparagus, artichokes), and used bold black backgrounds to set off our new colors. It was really fun.

Best selling item: Our Morels tea towel was one of our first designs, and the gold version is still our best seller!

Your favorite item: I’m really enjoying our new indigo chambray napkins right now.

Favorite store (other than your own): I really like the museum store at the Museum of Contemporary Craft here in Portland. Every time I pop by to bring them more product (we sell our linens and bags there), I discover a new independent designer.
