Mid-century modern mecca. What Moss is for contemporary modern design, R 20th Century is for mid-century modern: a retail store, museum, library and study center all in one. Wander into R 20th and you will find unique pieces of mid-century modern furniture arranged throughout their two large floors on Franklin street. Everything from minimal Scandinavian Hans Wegner sofas to pink gel-coated fiberglass-reinforced plastic lighting by Wendell Castle in 1969.
R 20th has a good library of books for sale and takes an active role in promoting the period through their frequent gallery shows (get on their email list!) and collecting of pieces that they feel have become too scarce to sell. They are not only crazy about this period, they are bookish about it too.
If you are looking for extremely special mid-century furniture, want to add to your collection, or just want to browse for designs to copy this is a good stop. The prices are high with numbers such as $5,000 for a dresser, $6,500 for a leather lounge chair, and $4,000 for a desk not being at all unusual. But hey, this is why you live in New York and not in Peoria. MGR
