Like many of her peers, Shannon South was inspired by William McDonough's Cradle to Cradle, the green design manifesto that calls on companies to create more closed-loop products that won't rapidly degrade with age. She decided to focus on leather goods.
At the time of her conversion, Shannon was a bag designer. As she describes it, "I was sending CAD drawings to China and having my bags mass produced, but ... The creator in me had a strong desire to make physical objects that I could carry and that people could admire. I went to Goodwill, found a leather jacket and let the details guide my design."
She now oversees the US production of bags, ottomans, throw pillow cases, and even iPhone cases — all made from recycled leather. Materials are sourced in thrift shops and through direct donations to her studio.
Shannon maintains a webshop, where you can see everything her studio makes in one place. Prices range from $15 for an iPhone case to $275 for an ottoman. You can also find her bags through Barney's and COOP.
