It's one thing to buy a bike; it's another thing to buy a bike that's hand-crafted in Oakland, California from locally-grown bamboo. Stalk Bicycles is "a team of passionate dudes dedicated to the lifestyle of two-wheeled transportation." Their 4-6 lb bike frames are made of bamboo finished with a weather sealer to protect against moisture and UV damage, while the bike joints are made of natural hemp and carbon fibers embedded in a non-petroleum based resin.
More about Stalk Bicycles:
When you strip it all down, it’s a bike. It’s a frame with two wheels, a seat and handlebar. But god how we love how this thing can encapsulate what inspires us. We love how every bamboo bike we make is a rolling work of art, each as individual as the rider in the saddle. We love how our customers geek-out over the components that make their bikes unique. And we’re inspired by the statement our bikes make when we roll around town. A stare of bug-eyed disbelief, tapping, poking and a slew of questions usually ensues. People just want to ride them.
Bikes are currently custom made with a lead time of 4-8 weeks, but standard-sized frames are coming in May 2011. Prices for a custom frame start at $800, but can be outfitted with any extras you want.
