All of the furniture is designed and made in Southern California. If some of the pieces seem vaguely and comfortingly familiar, chalk it up to the fact that owner and designer Ronnie Gene honed his talents at Room Service Home before deciding to open his own shop in the neighborhood he'd moved to and come to love. The pieces here have that that same inviting feeling and they have that same solidity; this is furniture that's made to last, that'll form the foundation of your home whether you're living in a loft downtown, a house in Santa Monica or an apartment in Pasadena. Chairs are upholstered in richly coloured leathers and fabrics; drawers, devoid of the hardware that can quickly date a piece, pop open and glide smoothly; tables are well-balanced.
We love that we can have any piece modified to our specifications and still walk out with a something for a price that's competitive with that of many mass-produced retailers. Whether we need a gift (we're looking forward to their latest venture into pottery and candles), inspiration on how to incorporate art into our home or a new couch, (Sub)Urban home is a vital addition to a burgeoning area and a sign that this neighborhood is not just a pitstop, it's a destination.
- Founded: November 2009
- Founded by: Ronnie Gene and Beatriz Ricartti
- Headquarters: Los Angeles
Created by Ronnie Gene, who formerly worked at Room Service Home, and Beatriz Ricartti, who saw a need for a furniture store to furnish the lofts of the artists who are pioneering the emergence of downtown Los Angeles as a vital and thriving neighborhood. The store also serves as a gallery space, showcasing the work of local artists, and serves as one of the hubs for the area's famed ArtWalks.
