While The Field House is not new to Seattle, having opened in 2009
, it is new to me, as I only just discovered it last month. I was one of the lucky winners in a baby chicken-naming contest (yes, they housed live baby chicks in the Spring), and received a lovely gift card as my prize. An off-shoot of the men's clothing store, Blackbird
, The Field House is every urban outdoorsman's dream. While it's aesthetic is rooted in Canadian and Inuit decor, The Field House also showcases the Northwestern fishing and hunting community with it's ship statuettes, animal-skin rugs and shipyard ephemera. Their main market is clothing and boots, giving a nod to old world style with bow ties and wood pipes, but the real stars of the shop are vintage camp house tools, kitchen appliances and still-life vignettes that litter the space. From old wooden wagon wheels to goose decoys and whitetail antlers, The Field House reads like a fashionable camping lodge from the mid-1800s. This is a picturesque Seattle gem for anyone who appreciates the beauty of lodge living and modern rustic decor.

The Field House is an experimental pop-up shop reminiscent of general stores that were once at the heart of rural towns across America. Its shelves are stocked with a wide variety of merchandise, including classic work wear, vintage goods, basic groceries and candies, flowers, and perfumes and candles. It captures the history, geography, and folklore of times past, when goods were less disposable and had more meaning, a time when people canned their own food and took a moment to converse with strangers. It is perhaps Blackbird's most personal store, as it is inspired by owner Nicole Miller’s eccentric Pacific Northwest family and her desire to get back to basics.
In addition to merchandise, The Field House offers free weekly classes on lost skills such as "How to Debone a Chicken" or "Lawnmower Repair." The store will sell Christmas trees for the holidays and will serve a "cup-a-joe" from an insulated Stanley thermos.
