The Regional Assembly of Text, opened in August of 2005 by Rebecca Dolen and Brandy Fedoruk, is an absolute gem of Vancouver. It's a stationery store where every product focuses on the theme of text, valuing handwritten or hand-set type over using technology to communicate. The shop has become a meeting place where you can also buy journals, books, greetings, stationery, buttons, and many, many other unique items.
The shop is incredibly warm and welcoming with an old-school institutional style. Many of the things that make this shop so charming were rescued, including an antique letterpress, available for use for just $5 per hour, or free if you are willing to spend an hour sorting through the boxes of letters that accompany it.
You definitely get the sense that the shop places a high value on having one-of-a-kind handmade designer items, most of which are handmade by locals. The Regional Assembly of Text also hosts the "Letter Writing Club" for those who love to send handwritten letters. You can also subscribe to the book of the month club or button of the month club, where you'll receive one collectible button or book per month for one year.
Rebecca Dolen, founder The Regional Assemble of Text, says:
We hope to find people that appreciate handmade, not mass produced products. It's a slower pace here, and one that we hope inspires other people to feel they can make things, too.
