New York, NY
TRNK New York co-founders Tariq Dixon and Nick Nemechek got their first taste for selling vintage finds via the Apartment Therapy Classifieds. With their collective eye for quality pieces and good design, we took notice of their corner of the Classifieds almost immediately. They recently launched their own e-commerce site and, not surprisingly, it's stocked full of amazing one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.
Name/Title: Tariq Dixon & Nick Nemechek/Co-founders
Launch date: We officially launched TRNK New York in April 2013, but have been selling vintage finds on Apartment Therapy Classifieds since last September.
Inspiration for opening: Our journey began with a red pickup truck and an empty apartment. When Tariq’s previous roommate moved out, so did most of the furniture. We needed to furnish our Brooklyn home, but quickly realized that most stores were either too feminine or sleek for our tastes. We have an eclectic style that mixes old with new, and there was no single retail destination that completely suited our needs. After months of scouring the Hudson Valley in Nick’s Ford Ranger, and toiling over online marketplaces for hours upon end, we eventually managed to assemble our idea of an urban oasis. However, the resulting exhaustion inspired us to conceive of an easier solution. A few months later, we created TRNK New York as a one-stop online destination to find masculine and character-filled products for the home.
Merchandise source: We source our product from the world's best marketplaces both on and offline. We have some product directly for purchase on our site, but for the most part, we feature product from our favorite online shops and marketplaces. We do the heavy lifting for our customers - scouring sites like eBay, Etsy, large brands and small boutiques for unique and original products.
Best selling item: Most of our products are one-of-a-kind, but our customers love mid-century seating - pretty much anything teak and with sleek lines.
Your favorite item: We stumbled upon this really great photo of FDR last week. It is incredibly candid and a great conversation piece. Another favorite item we found recently is a pair of chairs by Arthur Umanoff. The chairs are in incredible condition, and really add a lot of character to a room.
Favorite store (other than your own): We love Joinery, in Williamsburg. They have a great, edited assortment of home furnishings and clothing. We especially love the cotton textiles and rugs they have from Minas Gerais, Brazil. They are handwoven by local Brazilian artisans in traditional patterns - and because they are cotton, they are also a really great price!
