Store History

  • Founded: 2010
  • Founded by: Jim Newsom
  • Headquarters: Seattle, Washington
  • Sister stores: Urban Hardwoods

From the folks at Urban Hardwoods comes a new Seattle sister store. Recently opened by proprietor Jim Newsom and his team, Urban House carries a mix of reclaimed hardwood tables, mid-century furniture, and artist-made home furnishings. Newsom's tables are "live edge" designs, meaning they incorporate salvaged hardwoods.

The wood may have gnarls and cracks that make it undesirable for mass production, but give it a unique and richly textured appearance in the hands of a master carpenter. (The most famous live edge woodworker was George Nakashima.) The organic modern aesthetic of live edge furniture fits in well with the showroom's mid-century modern pieces by designers like Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, and Charles and Ray Eames.

Urban House is located in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood near Pike Place Market. It's a higher-end furniture district, where you'll also find designer showrooms and modern shops like Design Within Reach.
