Patricia Hamm and Debbie Stevenson
The owners began the shop as a place for them and their friends to sell vintage treasures found at garage sales and estate sales in central Texas.
"We make crap look great, honey”, says Patricia Hamm of Whimseys, and it’s true. Patricia has an uncanny knack for turning trash to treasure and making other people really want it. Devoted customers come in several times a week to see what surprises Patricia has uncovered in her weekly garage sale shopping trips.
Whimseys is located in Llano, a charming small town that is about 75 miles west of Austin. Owners Patricia and Debbie love to shop and have based their business on this obsession. They relentlessly hunt down the best bargains on vintage finds and then offer them at reasonable prices to their customers (nothing in the store is over $200). They almost always paint the furniture that they find, because “no one buys brown furniture”, and they repurpose ordinary things into decorative items.
Patricia strives to create a fun shopping experience and styles vignettes with a sense of humor. She hopes to giver her customers fresh ideas for combining inexpensive and cast-off items into surprising vignettes. For example, a pink 1950’s vase sits next to a flamingo figurine and a glass bowl full of pink doll parts. Groupings of vintage flashlights stand on a silver tray and a cluster of paint brushes becomes a bouquet in a chipped urn. Because Patricia and Debbie frequent garage sales, the boutique is constantly being rearranged so that the old is always new.
