Since starting Apartment Therapy in 2004, we've seen a lot of change in the industry; things have sped up, manufacture is largely overseas, people are more connected to ideas and products and old, traditional companies have really faltered. Despite the recession, which knocked homeowners to the ground, cracks have appeared in the pavement and new companies and ideas have shot up. We've watched the rise of flash sale sites, small design retailers, mass online retailers like Wayfair and Amazon, and aggressive cataloging by the likes of Restoration Hardware. Now something else is happening.
Lately, we can't get enough of the warm glow of copper. It has the luxe feel of gold, with just a touch of the unexpected. And a little bit of copper goes a long way —just one of these things would be enough to add the perfect bit of shine to any room. You can polish your copper objects to keep them shiny, or leave them on their own to develop a natural patina.
I've always loved these big fat border sheets, but they've never done them in this hot red. The dark colors here and the modern stripe in a bohemian traditional setting like the pic above are all perfect.
Usually you have to wait until the season is over to get a good deal on clothes. Not here! We found 10 stylish perfect-for-fall items (for the guys as well as the ladies!) that you can rock right now! Read on.
I've never had cable, so my recent attempts at cable acquisition were a bit of a shock: who knew it was so expensive, and so impossible to get direct information? Who knew it involved being swindled at every turn?!?
We are well into fall, but infamous Black Friday isn’t too far away either. What should you buy this month, versus hold off on until November? Here’s what you can expect to find good deals on this October:
Q: I saw a picture of the IKEA Stocksund sofa in their latest email ad but there is no link to it and when I search the US website it can't be found by the name. Does this couch exist in Europe? I love it and wish we had it in the States!
I've seen many horizontal book storage designs over the years, but this one is better for two reasons: one, it mounts on the wall, which saves you precious floorspace, and two, it's made of lovely, warm teak.
At the top of my wish list for this fall is a giant chunky knit wool blanket. I keep seeing them on Scandinavian design blogs, and every time I do I take a minute and imagine how wonderful it would feel to be snuggled up underneath a blanket that feels like a giant wool sweater for your entire body. So I've hunted down a few sources for these enormous lovelies, and also a few DIYs for those of you brave (and talented!) enough to make your own.
Quality should win out over quantity every time. But if you don't have a ton of money to spend, and if you would rather save on items that don't need the fancier version of itself, you're in luck. You don't need to spend money on the most expensive items to ensure a good product, and sometimes the most basic and least expensive things will do the job just as well.
