Q: I have the option of inheriting two mirrored pedestals (the picture is not of the ones I may receive, but they look the same). They were previously used for commercial purposes, and I don't have much vision for them beyond imagining them in a showroom.
I have coveted mirrored console tables, but I am not sure about these pedestals. Is there a way I can incorporate them into my eclectic home stylishly, or should I let them go?

I don't like mirrored furniture, they should stick in the retail environment. What on earth can you do with them? And what can you place on them? A matching mirror ball?

If you have to ask your first instinct is to pass.
What would they look like if you turned them on their sides and stacked them? Would the result be tall enough to do something with?
Oh, I don't know. They could be plant stands. Or book stands--it's hard to know without the exact measurements. Or candle stands.
Depending on how wide the sides are, I might put one on its side on a long console table and use it as a stand for other objects--some on top of it and some leaning against it.
If your home is eclectic, there's a way to fit these in. I can't tell if you like them, but can't figure out how to use them--in which case I'd take them and try them in a variety of places. Or if you don't like them, but feel a connection to the owner--in which case I'd take a picture of them to remember them by and not take them in my home.
Maybe if you put them on a shelf or something, instead of using them on the floor as is common?
But I too have a mirrored pedistal that I have no idea what to do with, so I have not good ideas.
ohhhhhhh, I'd use them outside! Put a flowering plant on them and let them reflect the sun, sky, grass, trees, whatever. A little glam in the garden, balcony, patio, etc is a good thing!
I'd use them in my bedroom to hold jewelry displays and such.
I'll take 'em if you don't want 'em! I'd put plants or sculptures on them.
Maybe I'm weird but I love them. I'd sit them next to each other and use them as mini side tables next to the couch.
I would get rid of them. They take up a bunch of space and no more function than a flat mirror.
Trust your gut. Sell them and use the money to buy something you really want.
Do you like them? If you like them you'll find a way to use them. If you don't like them now you'll never be happy with them, so don't take them.
If you don't love them, why would you put them in your house?
I think you could update them with some cut out decals and frosted glass spray, make them yours
I agree, if you don't love them, pass.
However, if it were me, I'd tuck one into a darkish corner or maybe a stairs landing (if there's enough space) and put a beautiful vase on top, or a sculpture. (They are for display, after all.)
Or get a circle of glass cut about double the width of the base and place on top as a side table. (Ask in the glass shop about how to keep it from tipping. You might want adhesive or rubber bumpers.)
The bottom won't be glazed, so turning on the side won't look nice if the bottom is visible.
If you have the space in a bathroom, that's another location where the could look pretty... holding a basket of rolled towels, for instance...
If you don't love them at first sight, you won't like them later on, either.
With a candle on it next to the bathtub, or in the garden or on the balcony with flowing green plants on top.
But if they are not to your taste you should just pass on them. No use putting stuff that's not loved into your home when you don't need them.
Take some black electrical tape and tape the edges so they look like invisible cubes.
I like @michpam and @SherryBinNH ideas. In the garden would be super cool or holding a vase or sculpture. But along with everyone else, if they just really aren't your style you should sell them to someone who will love them. If you really want to keep them but are having trouble deciding what to do with them, you could invite friends over to get their input. Walk around the house with them and just try different arrangements. A little brainstorming may result in some really cool ideas.
If you don't love them, don't take them. I think that's the rule for any furniture.
I think they would be awesome little side tables for a drink and a snack between two chairs.
Mirrored furniture is so hot right now. My first thought is use them as side table, maybe in a bedroom. I imagine a colorful lamp on the taller one. I like the idea of using it for jewelery or even in the bathroom with candles. Anything you do with them probably should be a glamorous display. If you don't like the glamour look in your home..skip these. ;)
I say take them and try a couple different arrangements, I really like the idea of placing them on a patio or outside to be plant stands. If you wind up not liking them after all you can just craigslist them no problem!

Yes! If you lived in Northern Virginia I would offer to buy them from you. You could always sell them on craigslist or ebay. I've been looking for something like those!
Yes! If you don't want them, I'll take them. The neat thing about mirrors of any kind is that they are instantly whatever color or pattern you choose for them to reflect. Or, for that matter, whatever light you want reflected. You could even stack them. Or, use them to hide cords or cables while reflecting more attractive portions of your home. Or, combine them with radically opposing antique elements to show off your very eclecticism. In general, they only look like mirrors until you place them where they will reflect the image of something else. That's why magicians love them, and that's why I love them too.
I haven't figured out the 'how' yet, but:
Take one, cover in black lace design (paint? decal?), add some sort of fringe to the bottom edges and hang from the ceiling as a "reflected light" chandelier?
next to a fire place
Take them. Them move them around and try them with various of the good suggestions here (though I think they may be too large to work well on another piece of furniture, and I wouldn't hang them from the ceiling.) Other ideas are great.
Often, I have to try small pieces of furniture in various places before I can determine where and if they will work. Sometimes just by putting something everywhere it will fit, I stumble upon something I never would have thought of.
Is there someone else who wants them if you don't take them? Or what will happen to them otherwise? I'm just wondering what the harm is in taking them and trying it out and selling them if it doesn't work. I love mirrored furniture, but agree that the shape of these is tough. However I like the idea of using them outside...something about putting them in a natural environment gives them back the glam edge they would be missing inside.
Otherwise, I like the idea of trying to do something different with it besides using them as pedestals....are they too tall to be put on a tall bookshelf amongst books and other items? I think they could be cool as part of a styled bookcase if they would fit. Or the idea of converting them to be a table base is interesting.
Also, if there is a way to do something to the mirror to give it a mercury glass/antiqued mirror look, that could help with the "showroom" feel.
They could be nice to stack books and decorative objects on. I could really see it working in a glam/eclectic environment.
They should be reflecting something nice though, so keep that in mind, or it will be an eyesore.
I would take them and I would definitely figure out how to use them. So many uses, and many have been suggested here.
I assume you are getting them for free - I would accept anything unless it is something I have strong negative feelings about. Sometimes I don't have immediate use for everything but it comes with time. If not, I pass them onto somebody else who likes the object or I take it to a charity store.
Keep and repurpose them! There are great window films out there with the cutest designs that can dull the glossy mirrored finish. That's just my 2 cents!
I would try them out around the house, see how you feel after a week or so. If you don't love them in the end, put them up on craigslist or ebay. It seems like a win/win situation to me.
I like the idea of covering them with window film. I was also thinking that turning them on their sides and mounting distressed wood tops might make for some cool coffee tables.
I have a tendency to accumulate stuff I think looks great or is cool but I never really utilize. If you're not truly feeling these pieces, as if you absolutely have to have them, then pass. It's what I have to consider to not have to rent a storage unit for optional decor. When something comes along that would be fab, you just KNOW.
I'll take them!
But I agree with most people here, if you don't love them, pass.
But I LOVE them and would take them and I also consider myself "eclectic" and can think of 100 ways to use them! The way I'd use them...if they have a mirrored bottom also (or even if they don't you could add 1 at the glass shop) set it on its side and put candles on it! The effect it would give off would be amazing!
What about outside?
oooh! I think they're great! What about having two small pieces of glass cut to turn them into fully functional side tables?
Normally I'd say that if you're asking others, pass, because your first instinct should be 'love it, gotta have it' - however - last night on HGTV they did a sneak peek of the new Design on a Dime that's debuting in October. They did an acetone burn technique ON mirrored squares that you might consider trying because it would give a really interesting look to the pedestals and would make them fit very well into an eclectic setting. Check HGTV's listings because I suspect they'll repeat the show, since it was a teaser leading up to October, look specifically for an episode of Design on a Dime titled "Modern Mashup".
