If it's a hand-made piece of antique furniture, no. Never. If it's a factory made piece that's merely old, go wild.
If it's a Craftsman house with original paneling, it's up to you, but everyone will call you a philistine behind your back if you paint. If it's particle-board paneling, then paint is the best you can do until you bring in the sledgehammer.
I like Lisa's advice, but I'd also like to add: it's your furniture, it's your house, you only live once, and paint remover exists for a reason.
Well said Lisa.
I have to agree with Jillo - It's your stuff.
Paint anything you want. If it 'de-values' it, who cares, it's your stuff.
I think that if you paint something like the lamps or the sofa, you will loose that thing wich some time ago attracted you from them. I believe in have some respect to the objects and its souls.
I agree with Jillo if it's factory made. But if it's something a human being spent a lot of time hand-crafting, I think you ought to respect that, or leave the piece for someone who will.
