As winter tires on many of us are on the lookout for ways of making indoor fun, well, fun again. This inexpensive project idea is definitely bookmark worthy; it's a two-parter, first you create the town, then you play in it.
A shower curtain and a fistful of Sharpies looks like all you need to get started. Well, almost -- read Filth Wizardry's full post for a tip on how to ensure those road lines are always parallel.

Not going to be the last person to mention the hazards of vinyl off-gassing. Please don't put my kids on top of a new shower curtain. The lovely fumes of Sharpies would be a fitting accompaniment to the stank. And permanent markers won't come off of kitchen cabinetry.
This can also be done with multiple strips from a big roll of craft paper (back-taped at the seams) and water-based markers. A great idea, but let's not hurt our kidlets in the process.
You could use a canvas drop cloth for this, too. I am just thinking about my students (ages 5-8 with special needs) and would want it to be durable and then they could use washable markers, too, so no one's clothes get ruined. Excellent idea!
Non-vinyl shower curtains are easy to find and in fact, dominate the market now. And I don't think water based markers/washable markets would be durable enough for the job. You either have to go Sharpie or choose paint or something else.
Great idea!! Thanks so much for sharing. I love something they can create and then enjoy.
The Filth Wizards are true geniuses. The beauty of this project is its indestructibility--it won't rip or tear. The liner must cost all of $4 for a PVC-free one. It can go outside or in the garage. And anyone who's afraid of the offgassing potential of Sharpies is due for a long, anxious parenting ride indeed.
