You know those shower caddies that hang over the shower head? Or shelves that suction-cup onto the wall? They're fine for adding storage, but they do take up space, which can become a nuisance in a small bathroom where elbow room is lacking anyway. That's why we love the idea of shower niches recessed between the studs in the shower wall.
In terms of scope of work, this project is better suited for homeowners. It can be tough to pull off if you're in a rental — but not impossible, if you can get the landlord's permission, that is. With careful, selective demolition and someone who's handy with carpentry and tiling, you can have the niche in place without tearing the whole bathroom apart.
We love a niche in contrasting tile. And the examples that use mosaics may be even simpler to achieve, as in some cases you can size the mosaic to fit the niche without actually cutting any tile.
