A good friend asked for help looking for storage options for her husband's CD collection so we've been on the hunt for fun and stylish options. Though this system won't help her deal with the hundreds of CDs she has to work with, we loved the way the SigmaRail turns CD covers into an ever-changable art display...
The SigmaRail by Lowkon is customizable to meet your design needs. Constucted of sturdy aluminum, it should coordinate with any modern decor, and the patented design allows you to grab any CD without removing those around it. At 42EUR for the 5 CD SigmaRail, this isn't a particularly budget friendly solution, but might serve as an inspiration for a similar DIY using inexpensive picture rails. I like the idea of evolving display. I do it with old records in LP frames.
I'm living in a teeny tiny apartment and decided that the best thing to do was to chuck all the jewel cases for the hundreds of CD's I own, put them in vinyl CD envelopes with their back art and liner notes and put them in drawers. I don't need to see my CD's displayed, personally. And 500 CD's fit in the 2 tiny drawers of an Ikea Malm nightstand. It's been an excellent solution! But only if you aren't looking to display what you own.
42-52 euros for a single rail (or $57-70). Eesh. I guess if you really love your CDs, then it might be worth it. I think ThatGrrl's system works better (you save a ton of space when you don't keep the jewel cases). Or better yet, digitize everything, sell your CDs and buy an iPod.
I like the idea of being able to display (some of) my cds. Just like art work and the rest of your apartment, the music you listen to makes a statement about who you are. Its also budget friendly decor if you don't have to buy that expensive rack to show them off. In an issue of readymade (annoyingly I cannot find it on their website) they used jewel cases to frame portions of a large picture to create a wall mural. To hang each jewel case on the wall they use self adhesive velcro. I imagine you could create a display similar to the one shown using that method and maybe tacking the wall portion of the velcro to the wall to hold the extra weight of the cd.
ThatGrrl ...I did the same exact thing with my CD's! Leaves more space for my 8track tapes and LP's to be proudly displayed.

I like the idea but do agree it's price is a little expensive, especially when doing more than 1 of them.
But what is getting to be annoying is this automatic suggestion of rip, get rid of and store electronically your music as if that's the only solution. I agree w/ a couple of others, wither go w/ slim jewel caces or put them in binders or other space saving solutions w/ cover art etc and unless you compress them to MP3, you'll be degrading the quality of what you have on CD, never mind a lot of newer releases are majorly compressed as it is.
I like this. It reminds me of the iTunes artwork screen saver on my computer.
