We've come across tutorials for making your own silhouette portraits before, but this one may be the quickest and easiest. And that means we're most likely to try it! Emily made them of her family and walks you through it in about five simple steps.
You can find her instructions with accompanying photos on her blog The Anderson Family Crew. As she notes, getting a good photo of your child in profile might be the trickiest step (and potentially take you over the 30 minute mark for this project!), so you may need to keep a camera handy for an afternoon and snap it when they're not paying attention. Emily used photo paper, but since you really just need the outline of head and shoulders, it seems to us you could also just print (even in b&w) on cardstock.
Thanks Emily for making diy silhouettes unintimidating and accessible!

i actually did use cardstock...i figured that would work best since i was putting paint on it.

If you tape the photo to black cardstock and then cut out the photo, you can skip the painting step. Simply peel away the original photo, flip over the cardstock and use an acid-free glue stick to adhere the silhouette to the background. To see what I mean, check out my tutorial:

I love the silhouettes and made some of our family last year to put up in the living room.

For Christmas, I took photos of all of my husband's nieces and nephews and framed all their silhouettes grouped by families to give to my Mother-in-law for Christmas. I really love the way this project turned out.
