Frederick's Historic District has long been a hub for antiques and country collectibles, but Silk & Burlap is a bit of an anomaly in the area. As a lifestyle shop, it blends some of the best elements of vintage and modern design in decor, fashion, and personal goods. The result is an ever-changing collection of eclectic wares from vintage lighting to lovely new scents — with the allure of a curiosity shop and the ease of a well-curated boutique.
After meeting the owners, Saule and Angelique, and their associate, Hallie, it was not difficult to see what accounts for the store's success. Saule and Angelique, both California natives with backgrounds in mainstream retail, have a knack for infusing the cutting edge with the classic and the homespun with the opulent. The duo met through their adorable daughters, and quickly discovered their shared desire for creating a retail environment that recognizes the "lasting beauty in vintage goods and to bring[s] accessible style to[...]customers through up-cycled treasures blended with conscientiously manufactured wares while supporting the core value of nurturing family, community, and the environment."
They started selling their wares at barn sales and local markets, and recently made the transition to their very own full-time storefront. They are now in their second location. Their passion for their store as well as their mission is apparent upon the first visit. While the shop has all the stylish wares and interesting vignettes of an upscale boutique, it has the family-friendly (their young daughters can often be spotted helping their mommy's), unpretentious vibe of a country store.
Silk & Burlap's inventory is constantly changing, but you can always expect to find a good mix of select antique upholstered pieces and mid-century modern classics for fair market prices, as well as a great collection of scents and fashions from local designers. Silk & Burlap does not claim to be a budget shop, but there are deals to be had, especially when comparing it to DC shops with similar wares. Angelique and Saule keep the shop fresh by purchasing all goods in small quantities (sometimes only one or two at a time) and rotating merchandise regularly. So check in frequently!
