This weekend, the Washington Post revealed the winners of its AMC Mad Men contest, and the home in the top spot certainly did not dissappoint. The 1953 charmer was largely untouched when an MCM loving family, Melissa Talley, Christopher Naughten, and their son, Patrick, bought it in 2007 and filled it with their collection of yard sale, auction, and dumpster-diving treasures.
The Post describes the family's union with the home as a home-coming of sorts. They had loved original mid-century pieces forever, and had been collecting modern family hand-me-downs and estate sale gems for years— as well as enlisting their now 23 year old son, Patrick, for the occassional treasure trash pick. When they found the perfectly intact mid-century house, they already had the perfect time capsule pieces. Melissa told the Post it was " like sea monkeys -- add water and, boom, we've got the whole environment." .

All I can say is: this place is über sweet.
I'm not sure what the criteria of the contest was because the furnishing and interior design were OK at best. The dining table was underscaled and not properly positioned in the room. And the hair art is just plain scary. However the architecture is extraordinary. The house is a bit of a gem.
IDK-- I liked that the photos weren't taken by a professional and that the house wasn't decorated by a professional designer. It feels real, lived in, and designed by someone who loves the MCM aesthetic. We live in this area and considered a few MCM houses when getting ready to buy, but we choose a more traditional house in a better scholo district. I still drive by these neighborhoods sighing all the way down the block!
Ditto Comicgeek--
The house is a gem, and some of the furnishings are interesting...
...but the red pleather IKEA sofa, the multicolor Japanese scrubbing cloths and the random plants in plastic pots are rather un-fortunate.
THIS is the kind of mid century modern that I love! Kind of a Dean Martin pad where he can seduce a blonde.
it's the midcentury modern that looks like my old school library that makes me nuts.
a white flokati rug would complete the living room :)
I don't know what those weird hairy things are in the second picture, but I do love the fireplace...
As usual those that hate MCM simply can't pass an opportunity to bash an obviously well designed and thought out home. Design like art is subjective Bepsf, I would think a designer would remember that.
"Obviously" - how I dislike that word. Maybe it's because I had a college roommate who would constantly fling that word around with such an air of indifferent superiority.
Iceblink, no one was bashing MCM design. On the contrary, I was saying that the quality much of the furnishings do not live up to the house.
