Living a simpler life without the everyday technologies upon which most of us are reliant is an escape we've probably all considered. That's what Better Off author Eric Brende and his wife, Mary, did...
..."Eric Brende conceives a real-life experiment: to see if, in fact, all our cell phones, wide-screen TVs, and SUVs have made life easier and better -- or whether life would be preferable without them. By turns, the query narrows down to a single question: 'What is the least we need to achieve the most?'. With this in mind, the Brendes ditch their car, electric stove, refrigerator, running water, and everything else motorized or "hooked to the grid" and begin an eighteen-month trial run -- one that dramatically changes the way they live, and proves entertaining and surprising to readers.
We would fully recommend this book to anyone who has wondered, like the Brendes, "what if?". Reading of their trials with, say, hand washing the laundry that led to new insights was entertaining and informative.
More information on the book and purchasing is available through the publisher, Harper Collins. Interested in hearing yet more about the experience? Here's an interview with Brende at the Harper Collins website.

I tried to read this book a year or two ago and I hated it. I thought that it would be a book about building a modern off-the-grid homestead. Instead, Brende and his wife move to an Amish community and take advantage of the already established "off the grid" infrastructure. I found Brende to be sanctimonious , hypocritical and mysogistic. His poor wife is nearly driven crazy by domestic drudgery while pregant with the couple's child. I couldn't even make it all the way through the book.
A large part of what the Brende's do now is sell soaps at the St Louis Soulard Farmer's Market on Saturdays. I live in DC now, and miss their fantastic soaps. The Rose, Winter, and Forest Mint have to be my favorites. They do a wonderful job on my oh-so-sensitive skin.
You can mail-order from them too. I think 3 bars are about $10 plus shipping. Here's the address they list on their soap wrapper: The Brende Family, 2037 A;;en Ave., St. Louis, MO 63104 (Ooo... and they have a toll-free phone number, too: 866.785.7425 might want to call and see what they have in stock, and the exact prices.)
